255/85 R16 Owners Experience

BORA makes them starting at 3/4” in 1/4” increments. The 3/4” require trimming the lug studs unless you are running certain wheels with pockets on the mating surface.

 

Little help here please, rather than read through 220 pages. Any PRERUNNER SR5 owners W/O LIFT stuff 255/80-85/16-17?

 

This appears to be a variation of the infamous 'can I put 33's on a stock Tacoma' question. There is very little difference between the pre runner and 4x4 versions of the Taco. While you may be able to stuff them in, you will experience rubbing when operating the vehicle on anything but a smooth surface, in a straight line, at low speeds. Trimming your inner fender and inside edge of your mud flaps will help to prevent having the tires rip them off, but I would suggest a 2 or 3 inch lift to prevent damage to your vehicle prior to mounting 33's.

I'm hoping to mount the 255/85r16 tires to my truck without a lift and get it lifted within a week from there. I just figured it made more sense to get the tires put on before getting the lift. Is that a bad idea?

 

Yea, go for it. It will be easier to identify where you’re going to rub. Cut, bend, smash whatever is in the way.

If you want to do it correctly, where your suspension cal fully cycle without rubbing, then it makes no difference if you’re lifted or not. You will rub the same places either way.

 

That would depend on how you drive, but I would get the lift first.

The first gen front wheel well is not shaped the same as a second gen.

Not entirely accurate, you will rub far more on the firewall and pinch weld and probably chew up the rubber.

The upper limit of suspension travel (bumpstop) and the lower limit (full shock extension) are the same whether you are lifted or not. The Tire will move trough the exact same range. Lifting only changes the point within that range the Truck sits at ride height.

Sure, you will rub less often if lifted driving on the street because you are sitting lower in the travel range. How often to you hit bump stops on the street? Not much. But if you use the full range of suspension travel, it will rub just as much as a bone Stock Truck.

I am not suggesting he puts the tires on and let them eat his truck. That’s ridiculous. I am saying he can install the tires, see where they rub, and modify accordingly. This will be the exact same trimming he would have to do if he was lifted.

I just ran my km2s through death valley. They 're awesome off-road. I have a 2.5in fox 2.5 kit all around with heavy duty Dakar leafs. The front rub when turned and compressed, otherwise It was smooth sailing on all the usual routes in the park, steel pass, lippencote, Hunter mountain etc. I ran 20-25 psi all the time.

They are pretty noisy on road, are the st max quieter? I got a set of 5 for a grand, mounted, so didn't even look at anything else.

I probably will need to adjust the front springs, but I'm unsure of risk of over pretension, so they're set straight out the box.

 

Where did you find that deal? I'm looking to get some soon as well.

I used the new Toyo's for my trailer. I had thought about putting them on the truck before I got the KO2's.

I will say the Toyo's are pretty conservative looking, with mild-looking sidewalls. I wish they were the more aggressive XT versions.



Looks aside, they're still great tires.

 

Any updates on how the Toyo M55s perform on highway conditions and regarding their overall longevity? I can get 4 for $900 but my rig is my daily driver and weekend warrior, I don't want to put down the cash if they're going to disappoint for my purposes

 

Where are you finding the m-55s for that cheap? They are usually close to $300 a tire

 

Craigslist. I figured it is a good deal, seeing as that's even less than 4 of some other brands, likely going to pick them up later.
