10,000 mile oil change interval...

NAAC3TACO got it right. I have a 2013 and that is what is recommended in the manual

 

Has it not been mentioned yet that not all vehicles are driven the same? Therefore the oil will be used differently, and require different change intervals?

I drive mainly short trips. Accodding to my Blackstone analysis my oil would be severely fuel contaminated by 10,000 miles.

You can't paint these things with a broad brush. It's a mechanical device, used differently, in different environments. What makes sense for your engine may not make sense for someone else's.

 

Us synthetic users are saying that across the board, you can extend oil change interval over dino oil in any condition. If your dino oil lasts 3K because you are a taxi driver in Vermont, then synthetic oil will extend it to 5K or more. I see my 2007 manual as an outdated piece of literature. It is 2018 and many things have changed and improved. Yes, I followed it during my warranty period but that's about it. If I followed my 1967 Plymouth manual, I wouldn't be installing radial tires on it.

 

I did that in my first truck/vehicle 20 years ago since I couldn’t afford to have it changed and was too busy to do it myself. I think it was around 12k on dino oil before I eventually did it. It didn’t really drain out, more like came out in clumps. I’m sure it wasn’t great for that engine, but it went another 50k that I knew of (so pushing 200k on a crap 1992 Ford engine).

 

I’m sticking with my shell 5w30 every 5k. I get my oil for free and don’t see a reason not to stick with it.

 

I run 10k on synthetic with filter changes every 5k miles. When I change the filter (and don't change the oil) I always make sure to add half a quart. Runs better than I do.

 

@ItalynStylion I'm sure you feel peace of mind replacing the filter at 5K, but it's not necessary if you use a synthetic filter. The Mobil 1 filters are designed to go up to 25K, to match their new 25K synthetic oil. I use Purolator One (blue) syn filters and change them with the oil change at 10K'ish. When I first started using syn oil, I was paranoid about oil filter changes and also changed them at 5K. However, the oil analysis' I've done on both my Taco and wife's Lexus have instilled confidence in the manufacturer's claims of 10K or 15K, etc...

 

I purchased Bias-Ply tires for my '74 Duster in 1985 because that was literally all I could afford, and the tires were bald. Wish I could buy that same Duster for the $350 it cost me then.

 

I personally don’t care when someone changes their oil. Doesn’t matter to me if you do it every 3000, 5000, 10,000, 150000 miles or never. What’s good for you isn’t necessarily good for others. Most of what has been said here regarding oil change intervals is guess and by golly, hearsay, “my experience”, and blurbs people have read on the internet. Little or no scientific evidence given. I like the manufacturers oil interval changes because I am sure they base it on some scientific data and studies. I doubt that it makes any difference if you go a thousand or two thousand miles over manufacturers written oil change intervals but who knows in the long run. Oil changes are relatively inexpensive whether you do them yourself or have them done. I personally will stick with the automakers change intervals. Everyone else do what ever floats your boat.

Yes blackstone labs is science, they simply test/analyze oil. You decide what the results mean and what you can do based on your results. Their tests do not change auto manufacturers oil change recommendations. The results you get for your vehicle and your oil is only for your vehicle. It’s does not mean you will get the same results with the same oil in another vehicle. If for example we both have the same vehicle, same engine, same oil , same interval it does not mean the results will be identical. There are too many variables. You cannot make broad generalizations for other people based upon your individual analysis results. Results will vary from person to person, vehicle to vehicle, engine to engine etc. etc. Blackstone labs analysis is a great way to gauge the health and condition of your engine, but only your engine.

 

This is a battle with no win in sight, .... But if I was buying a vehicle and the owner told me he waited 10k or more between oil changes, I would be hesitant, even if he said he never took it above 3000 rpm.

 

I was about to type the same thing. When I buy used I look for records, and if those records showed 10k mile oci’s I’d have to pass.

 

I know this is a very unpopular statement but; just do what the owner’s manual tells you to do and you’ll be fine.

 

My generalization from the start was Get your oil tested.

 

That's good to know. Are all of the Mobil 1 filters made that way or just certain ones? I had bought about 8 OEM filters so I've been burning through those but I'm currently on the last one in that batch. Might switch to the ones you're talking about and just change them with the oil each time.

 

It's not an unpopular statement, especially if the car is under the warranty period. I, for one, am addressing that manuals can get outdated and the do not keep up with improving methods and technologies. For obvious reasons, car manufacturers do up update car manuals with new editions; it would be cost-prohibitive.

 

First: It's 20K, not 25K - my bad.

The filters are the Mobil 1 Extended Performance line - I think it's the only filters they currently make (or design because I believe Champion Labs makes the filters to Mobil 1's specs). The first gen filters were rated up to 15K. With the 20K oil line, they are now designed to go 20K. The new 20K filters have a green accent color on the box and on the oil filter.

 

It's called climate change.
