WTF that tree came outta nowhere, right!?

It was brutally windy on Saturday too when I drove 530 miles to pick up my new trailer. Wind driven snow drifts all over the highway. Glad I wasn't towing this with the Tacoma. Not the greatest picture, it's messy but here it is:

Sorry I couldn't hang Noel, I had a retirement party that night to get back to.

I hear it's crazy right now... sucks, I know what it's like to fill with diesel, my buddys camp up north you can't get a oil truck in there in the winter, so we fill it 5 gallons at a time all winter.

where in MA are you? worst case try to find a place that sells off road diesel and you can toss in some Kerosene as well to keep it from gelling

My wife called the place we typically get it from this morning and they are coming in the next couple days. Not sure if they go out to your area (Taunton right?). The place is Arcudi... they typically don't have the lowest pricing, but they have always been quick response for me.

I filled mine at 3/8 a few weeks ago just because I saw prices kept climbing, glad I did now! I would have been pretty low now and might have had trouble getting more.

Shouldn't need to assuming it's a basement tank. Unless his basement gets really cold, but mine never drops below 55.

yeah off road is dyed red. Its cheaper cause it doesn't have the road tax on it. But if you get caught putting it in an on the road truck you get fined pretty heavily. Finding places that sell it might be tough though. Call back the places for heating oil and ask if they carry off road diesel, most places do actually. Off road can be used as an alternative for heating oil, if your tank is in ground I say cut it with kerosene if its in the basement you should be ok

Wow! Looks like it's up around $2.80 now. I paid $2.39 maybe 2 weeks ago.

Hopefully I can get through the rest of the winter on this tank, then I can order it in the summer when it's cheap for next year. Plus my boiler guy wants to replace the oil line, but wants to do it when the tank is low so that would make all the timing line up.

Gas will be a requirement in my next house. Too bad almost no houses in my town have gas and my wife will want to stay in our town for the next place.

Mine is too, but I don't use that zone. It stays 55-60 on its own somehow. I'm okay with that.

Only other option for me would be propane, which I don't think is ever a cheaper option when you factor in BTUs, efficiency, and price.

They don't pre-cut the off road diesel like they do with on road when the temps drop out? I guess I never knew that.

I think the densely populated area near the next town over has gas and city water/sewer, but not where I am.

I can't imagine I'll ever end up in a house with either considering anything else I buy will just be more rural than I already am.

I wouldn't have propane as a primary fuel source. I have oil for heat and propane for cooking and the dryer. I like the propane cook top because you have it if you lose power.

I lived in a very inefficient house when oil prices were really high one winter. I was going through almost 200 gallons a month with the heat only at 65 degrees. I'll never do it again haha

I think off road diesel and heating oil are exactly the same thing. They're both dyed red and are only really differentiated for tax reasons like you said.

    I wouldn't either.

I have a 100-lb tank out back for a propane fireplace. If I run that overnight, I burn through 10% of the tank. BTU output is lower on propane, but efficiency is higher. I don't think it ever works out to be more cost effective than oil.

First year in the last house we spent $2500 in oil. This house is very well insulated, so I think I'll be at 500 gallons for the whole winter.
