I can't correct an experience or opinion. I am just saying that 1 person's experience has extremely little to do with everyone else's. I corrected false statements being brought up about the state of 1 truck or another based on 1 experience or a 10 year old consensus about an entirely different generation of vehicle.

I seriously hope you don't base major life decisions on 1 person's experience with something. If so, you need help bro.

I dont think recalls are not done out of the goodness of the Manufacturers heart. I don't think they start worrying about bad designs until someone gets hurt or killed.

You're just making up #s though. How about a real world example :)

My 2003 first gen Tacoma was $26k BRAND NEW. I sold it in 2012 with 167k miles for $12,500 and it sold almost overnight. That's about 50% resale value after almost a DECADE. My roommate had a 2004 Chevy Colorado with only 120k miles, it was newer and a lot less miles... he got $6k after trying to sell that POS for MONTHS.

So no the difference in resale is a lot more than "$2k".

last year I sold my 2005 2nd gen in 2016 (its in my post history). 2005 with 119k miles sold within a week for $19k. How much do you think a 2005 chevy Colorado with 119k miles is worth?? oh right we already know, about $5-$6k

Edit: in case you don't believe me here's the ad, posted for sale September 13th sold on September 20th. My exact quote was
"Was asking $18k and even that started a bidding war :/ amazing how well they hold value and desirable these trucks still are.
    Sold quick."
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-cab-4x4-custom-119k-miles-socal-sold.450733/

Now please find me decade old chevy colorados with 120k miles selling for almost $20k, I'll wait :)

Anecdotal experiences are meaningless at an individual level. However, to a manufacturer one experience does (or should) matter, you might only get one chance to make a loyal customer. Enough anecdotes and eventually trends emerge, statistics that don't lie. And with the Internet if there are truly underlying design or QC flaws, subjective or not, it doesn't take long for a significant number of people to say "Hey, that happened to me, too." and with it a reputation might be lost. Indeed, things do change and being beholden forever to a brand isn't wise. I've mentioned before despite having a bad experience with Ford and nothing but good with Toyota for a long time I'll give the new Ranger a chance.

Didn’t think I’d get people all stirred up, I couldn’t even find a GMC Canyon too look at when they first came out with the newer style, I think they look way better than the Colorado. My dad was interested but we met someone with a 15’ canyon both the passenger side and driver side door handles ripped off within the first couple months and transmission issues, no manual option with 4x4, I found my dad a 17’ TRD sport with the 6 speed manual and he loves it,

Easy there soldier.....prior to this taco i was a hardcore ridgeline fan boy(flame suit on). The new body style did kick me in the nutz but i must admit that truck Was perfect for MY needs..after 5 years of ownership i have Zero complaints, i got rid of it bc i had the "new" vehicle syndrome plus the fact that i couldnt pass on a 6speed manual taco.

True enough. Toyota is replacing frames because they were sued, not out of the goodness of their heart. I was referring to the comment that implied Chevys were better because they've had less recalls, which is a subjective statement at best.

I probably would have gotten a Colorado if the 4x4 version came in manual lol.

I'm not making up anything. First of all, you're comparing 2 completely different trucks. Those early Colorados sucked which killed their resale value. These new Colorados are vastly different.

Go look at a brand new 2018 Tacoma TRD DCSB OR 4x4. Every dealer has them at around $36,000-38,000. Dealers are also very reluctant to discount these trucks. Toyota in general doesn't either. Rebates are very rare on Toyotas. Meanwhile you can easily find a 2018 Colorado CCSB Z71 4x4 for around $33,000 brand new if not less. Tons of rebates and dealers regularly sell for invoice prices. You can find them on autotrader for $31,000 even. Right there is a $5000 difference on the low end. $7000 on the high end.

Now go look at KBB for resale.

    https://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-d...arty&options=6829266|true&condition=very-good

A 2 year old Tacoma (same model as above) with 40,000 miles on it goes for $29,645 private party.

    https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/color...arty&options=6841131|true&condition=very-good

A 2 year old Colorado (same model as above) with 40,000 miles on it goes for $26,474 private party.

So that's $3,000 difference at resale. We can't go further than that because that's as old as these trucks currently are. Older trucks are different trucks with vastly different powertrains that produce different expectations of durability over time. So a $3000 difference at resale and yet it's a $5000 difference at purchase. Not to mention, a higher purchase price means higher taxes and fees. And for most of us, higher amounts of interest paid too. The better buy financially with all the data available today is with the Colorado.

The only flaw in the scenario above is that the newest Colorados improved their powertrains since 2016. The newer engines have incresed hp and torque along with a 8-speed transmission instead of the older clunky 6-speed. (When GM had a flawed transmission, they improved it. With Toyota, they still keep making them exactly the same.) Which is why if I get the Toyota, manual it is. As for the comparison above, the 2016 has the older engine and transmission which probably hurts the value of it a bit more. The newest Colorados might be closer to even with the current gen Tacomas with their upgrades. And the diesel is a whole other story too which is harder to compare because diesels hold their values really well.

ahhh the old kia/Hyundai excuse "but but but the new ones are totally different trust me!". No, the only thing different about the new ones is they aren't old yet lol.

Back in 2008 the 2005 chevy colorados had a similar trend, they depreciated more than the Tacoma but not THAT big of a difference, but as time goes on the gap widens because the difference between chevy and Toyota becomes more apparent. The new ones will widen just the same.

You can already tell, go drive a used 2015 Colorado, I do every single time we get a used one on our lot (I even posted a video here about how much of a POS it was). Rattle city, headliner already drooping, rough idle on cold start, you can just FEEL it falling apart. And the one I reviewed only had 25k miles! My Tacoma right now has 25k miles and if you hoped in the drivers seat you wouldn't be able to tell if it had 30 or 30,000, just like all of my previous tacomas. And mine has been ABUSED.

I've already driven 3rd gens with 100k+ miles (my old toyota store sells them to a tree company that puts on about 50k miles per year) and they felt exactly as strong as both of my 1st and 2nd gens at the same mileage, cannot say the same about used Colorados I've driven with a 3rd of the miles.

I didn't think the lawsuit happened until recently. They've been buying back or replacing frames for a long time under a couple of limited service campaigns and I think it was somewhat out of customer service (or just to protect their reputation). The 1st gen trucks had a 15 year window, which isn't exactly a short time to support your product. Most times the minute the warranty expires a manufacturer tells you to pound sand. I mean, I agree that the frames on Tacomas are undersized and seem like insufficiently corrosion protected, but how long is long enough?

Resale after 2years is irrelevant to many people ... at least to me (sorry for the sample size of one). Where Toyota is really good, and of course we have to see if this holds true with the 3rd gen, is the resale after 10 or 20 years. Around here it’s hard to find a decent 4wd 1st gen Taco for less than $10K. Whereas it’s hard to find a decent Colorado of the same vintage - period. Sure the new twins are better, but will the used market care in 2030? I doubt it.
