After having ditch pods stolen i am nervous about bolting on new sliders Am i crazy?

Hi everyone,
as the title states, 2 days before Christmas my ditch pods were stolen. Bolts were undone and wire was just cut (pretty close to the pod i might add lmao)

anyway, those have been replaced and after hours of research and advice from friends and others i still couldn't trust any "security bolts" i found online as you can search the same thing "how to remove security bolts" and vampliers and other things come up....
so i just decided to leave the brackets and just quickly pop in and out the bolts for the ditch pods when i actually go wheeling or need them...(does anyone else do this?)

anyway, i have a nice new set of sliders i am expecting and i couldn't help but think... i am going to bolt this on, couldn't someone unbolt these too?

Aside from welding them on....are there any "grade 8 security bolts"? lol...


i understand they are heavy and have alot of bolts but have you guys ever heard of someones sliders being stolen?
am i being crazy?



some i know will say be more worried about your entire truck being stolen and trust me i am.
i live in a generally "very nice" neighborhood but is very close to freeways and maybe "less nice" neighborhoods.
I plan to have lojack installed soon as well as my own gps tracker i can pay for a SIM for... but thats another story. (pm me if you have advice )

grade 8 security bolts for the sliders might (1) be hard to find and (2) expensive.

I have not heard of anyone using them or needing them. Maybe someone else can chime in. Even if it was welded, they could still cut them off. Remember, if a thief wants something, they will do anything to get it..

 

Unbolting Sliders would be kinda labor intensive, I don't think you would have to worry

 

Maybe in addition to bolting them on have them welded anyway at the ends. That way if some lowlife actually removes all the bolts it'll still be welded.

 

Easy, after you bolt them on, have a welding shop weld the nut to the bolt behind the frame. It’ll prevent anyone from unbolting them and ensures you still have a bolt on version, that you won’t have to weld to the frame.

 

i considered this but rather not have to grind the frame if they ever have to come off

i didnt think of that.

What kinda crazy shit hole do you live in? But seriously if you just punch a couple threads on a few of the bolts they won't come off without cutting the bolt. Just remember if you ever want to take them off.

 

If you'll double nut each end that you are going to weld, you can tack the second nut to the bolt (not to the vehicle)

That way should you ever need to cut it off for a removal, the 1st nut will still be 'free', and you won't have to do grinding close to the mounting point and risk any damage.

That sucks OP. I thought about this same issue when I was considering bolting on $500+ worth of ditch lights to the outside of my rig.
I would be more concerned about the exhaust and cat before sliders. I read one post a guy did his own catback exhaust and said it only took 2 bolts and a hanger, to get the whole thing off.

 

To get the exhaust off, yes, not the cat. The cat is where the $ is.

But a battery powered sawsall makes short work of the pipe on both sides of the cat. And lifted trucks make it nice and easy to access.

 

They were aware of that issue and moved the cat further up into the engine bay on the 3rd Gen to reduce thefts.

Spot welds on the threading if exposed, or cap head so as to not be able to get a tool onto it. You can grind that off later if you want to take it off. If anything, it will slow them down and attract attention.

 

Have a welder just tack the ends on the mount plates.

 

This. Takes about 10 minutes.

 

IDK, I think they would be way too much trouble to unbolt.

 

Am I the only one that wants some vampliers now? Not to rip peeps off but for stripped screws!
