Installed the Decked system yesterday. Not the best idea I ever had installing it in single digit temps in a ingested garage but I couldn’t wait. I couldn’t be happier with the ease of installation and the increased storage space

 

So in preparation for commuting a lot this semester (gonna be ~12,000 miles by the end of it) I decided to change my spark plugs, clean my MAF sensor, and clean my throttle body. Most of it went down without a hitch, besides a bolt to a coil boot that snapped in half. This was my first time messing with anything in the engine and I have to say it was much easier than I anticipated. From start to finish it took about 3 hours. I like to think that I'm mechanically inclined, but made sure to read a bunch about these processes first.

Started on the passenger side by taking the air intake out and eventually the whole air box out and then cleaned the MAF sensor.


This was the throttle body before I cleaned it. Didn't think it looked too bad until I looked past the butterfly. All black and nasty back there.

After I cleaned it.

Definitely had some nasty shit back there.

This is the bastard that snapped in the engine block. I about had a heart attack when it happened cause I can't have my truck down for maintenance. Thankfully enough of the end was sticking out to where I could get some needle nose in there to get it out. Went to the hardware store and got a replacement for only 88 cents.


There she is installed. Hopefully not having the little flange piece isn't a big deal.


So after all this, I go to start the truck and it takes a few seconds to crank up. First attempt was nothing and then the second time it started and ran high for a little while. About 2500 RPM. I'm assuming this is due to excess throttle body cleaner so I'm not worried about it. What I am worried about is the engine code I'm getting now. My Ultragauge is telling me I have a pending P0300 which is a random cylinder misfire I believe. Sometimes when I start the truck the maintenance light flashes, and sometimes it doesn't. Have any of y'all had this happen before? I drove ~5 miles around the neighborhood and didn't feel or hear anything funny. I read sometimes the truck will shudder or knock with this code present, but I didn't notice any of that. Just wanted to see if y'all have any advice on what I should do about that.

 

Ignore the maintenance light. That's just a light that will become lit every 5,000 miles to remind you to do an oil change. It's not linked to any systems in any way. As far as the code, I would clear it with the UG, and see if it comes back. Did you gap your spark plugs before installing them?

 

That was my first thought too, but I changed my oil less than 2,000 miles ago so I thought it had to do with the spark plugs. I did gap all of them to be within spec before I installed them. Forgot to mention they were the factory Toyota ones (

If you gapped them and your truck is running fine, I'd clear the code and see if it comes back, and then go from there.

 

Did you put antiseize on the spark plugs and bolts?

Sure did. Once that one coil bolt snapped, I figured I should put it on those too.

 

Cranked up my coil overs a little more and now have my 3" lift back.
Re-torqued the ubolts from last week. Changed the oil & rotated the tires.

 

Alot of spark plugs nowadays come with special coatings on the threads, but it only takes a few seconds to dab a little antiseize on there for some extra piece of mind.

 

That was my thought exactly, can't hurt to do it and it only takes a few extra seconds.
