Anyone have an issue with the temperature/direction in the display not being bright enough to read? I run with my headlights on all the time, and the display is really hard to see during daylight.

When you turn the headlights off it gets brighter. But no...I can still read mine with the lights on.

This fix worked for me!!!! I'm new to the site and I am completely hooked on the info that this site offers.
    Thanks!

By the way, why doesn't Toyota offer a free fix since this seems to be an issue with many Tacos???

That would be awful nice of them wouldn't it??

But when they can charge you approx 900 bucks for part and install, why would they?

Gotta pay those big fines ya know!

I was surfing the web for a fix to this problem, which brought me to TW. I'll need to do it again, since the display doesn't want to work when it's cold, but it seems to be the solution. Many thanks for the pointer.

    HI SECRET SQUIRREL:

I SOLDERED AGAIN BOTH 510 TRANSISTORS THIS SATURDAY AND UNTIL THIS MOMENT THE temperature/compass meter IS WORKING 100%, AS THE FIRST DAY OUT OF THE DEALER. I ALSO REPAIR THE A/C SWITH LIGHT, I TOOK OFF THE A/C PANEL, REMOVE THE LIGHT THAT WAS "DEAD" , REPLACE A NEW ONE, REINSTALLED THE PANEL AND NOW MY TACO DASH LOOKS IN ORDER. I HAS DID THIS JOB WITH THE HELP OF A FRIEND OF MINE THAT INSTALLS ALARMS AND MUSIC EQUIPMENT IN CARS AND SUV. COST OF THE JOB, $5.00 FOR THE A/C LIGHT REPLACEMENT AND $10.00 FOR THE temperature/compass meter REPAIRMENT. THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR INFO, WITHOUT IT I SECURELY SPENT MUCH MORE. AGAIN THANKS.

I've been reading this thread and am amazed at how helpful everyone is... proud to own a Tacoma!!! Mine is a 2008 Access cab in "impulse red" I hope its "pre-wired" because a spent the money on ebay for the overhead console with the thermometer and compass....

Holy shit SecretSquirrel, you are the man! Mine went out so I did a quick search and found this thread. I looked at the fuses first thinking "na this couldnt happen to everyone." Well sure enough when I pulled down the overhead console down this is what I found:

I soldered it up and it works like a charm. I soldered both to be sure it doesnt happen again.

Welp, I must have fixed mine good the first time. It stopped working again, so today I took the console apart and lo and behold, the top 510 was missing. Can't find it anywhere - on the floor, the shift console, nuttin. So- anyone know where I can find another? It meters out at 50ohms, but I'be a little leery of just getting a radio shack component, not knowing the load rating...?

Bough my truck with 65K and in the first hundred miles after I bought it the compass quit working.... Go figure. Took it off today and the 510 was just shaking around in there! soldered it back on, works great. Thanks for this write up, saved me a ton and made me happy!!!:D

My re-soldering lasted for awhile, then the display went blank again. When I took the unit out, I saw that the top 510 resistor was missing altogether- so much for my microelectronic skills. I used a meter to determine the resistance of the other 510 (50 ohms) and to make sure it wasn't any other type of component. Then I went to Radio Shack and bought the closest thing I could find- a 47ohm 1/2W unit. Soldered that into place of the top 510, re- soldered the bottom one, and re-connected. For now, it's working. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Did the same thing. Bought mine with 30k miles and by 40k, it stopped worked (this week).

I'm going to buy a soldering kit this weekend to give it a shot (although I'm still under my extended warranty but who wants to spend the time waiting for the dealer to fix it?).

    Great thread!
