So how do I test those components? Spark plug has been replaced recently, so that's off the list.

I believe I did 8 or 10. I measured the overall circumference and then divided it. Then I just measured to that length, marked until it went all the way around and went to making grooves.

No belt wear has not increased.

Possible, but if it was it would had manifested itself by now.

Well, first I need to know what code it is. P0304? Cylinder misfired are usually a spark related issue. Rarely engine, a few times fuel. So the first thing you need to do is identify cylinder 4. I believe it is the passenger side middle cylinder. Pull the plug and inspect it. If it looks okay you have a couple options, you could do a coil swap between it and cylinder 2 or 6 (both are on the same side) clearing the check engine light/ code and seeing if the code follows to that corresponding cylinder you swapped the suspect coil to. If it does, you have a bad coil. If it persists on cylinder 4 you have successfully ruled out spark as the issue.

Then you move to fuel, which is a little bit more tricky, because there is no way to know exactly how much fuel the injector is discharging at all times. Testing becomes more sophisticated and even then all you have to rely on is pulse width modulation. You have the choice of replacing injector 4 or taking it to a mechanic for in depth testing.

if the belt is slipping & the blower isn't binding, i would replace the tensioner & see if that helps.

This post is only mildly helpful if someone doesn't know what they are doing. It gives her a list of parts she can shotgun replace, but if you want to shotgun parts, just pull out the wallet because you'll be uneducatedly guessing all day. Where the list ends is anyone's guess. It's better to understand the testing process rather than replacing things that don't need to be replaced.

Code was P0304. Only threw the code once, 3 weeks ago. So swapping parts from one cylinder to another won't tell me much.
Any other methods besides just replacing parts?

I agree, but the process of elimination of not more than 3 or 4 relatively inexpensive items sometimes ways out the failure rate. if it's not the few small easy to change parts, then the person has much bigger issues. just my opinion.

Swap the coils. That is a quick and dirty way of testing spark integrity of coils. I'm not too worried about the plugs I'd you just replaced them.

    How many miles again?

Depends how privy you are with a scanner. Do you have a scanner or a way of monitoring PID information?

Much agreed actually. I just want her much as everyone else to learn the how and why though. If she is willing to go through it all with patience and methodically, I am willing to be patient and introduce the next step as well. That's why I made this thread, so I can help you guys can understand.

#4 cylinder is drivers side middle. The diagram shown is as you look at the engine standing in front of the truck.

    ^^^ he is right. Oops.

In my mind I remembered that cylinder 6 is the one that suffered the most heatsoak and I also remembered it was under the blower, but for some reason I was thinking the blower went over the passenger side coils for some reason. LULZ.

I stand corrected, that picture is correct. In the past most engines i've seen the number 1 cyl was the drivers side front & the number 2 cyl was on the pass front, but on 4.0 it's reversed.

What size belt are you trying to run? 69.5? It may just be too tight, period. Run the factory size 70.5 and if it still slipping, RIP mod it. Done.

39K total, about 5K with the SC, about 300 since the UCON.

I don't have a scanner, but might have access to one from a neighbor. All I have right now is the BD unit, hooked up only as a monitor until I decide on something else.
What level scanner would I need? I'm assuming I would need to be able to read a pending code, since my CEL isn't being triggered.

Truly appreciate that attitude! I want to learn. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm also not uneducated. I have a modified vehicle & need/want to learn how to handle problems as they arise instead of being at the mercy of a local shop. I'm very familiar with the diagnostic process -- I'm a veterinarian -- I'm just not super familiar with mechanical things.

You need a scanner capable of displaying fuel trims, both long and short term, as well as misfire counter information for every cylinder. MAF information as well as ECT information. The more data available, the better.

Would the UltraGauge do all this? Considering a purchase.

Yes it should. Check their site or any information regarding their displayable parameters to be 100% sure, but you should be good to go with that. HOWEVER, it may not display STFT's, LTFT's, and will definitely not show a live individual cylinder misfire counter.
