Hi all. I just joined this forum. I'm a former 4Runner owner and owned a few cars since but miss the Toyota Truck world. I've long admired and lusted after a Tacoma and finally thinking of trying to find a TRD Offroad fully loaded with low miles. Like a 2017 with low miles and all the packages ( sonar, blind spot, rear cross traffic warning, nav moonroof, tonneau cover etc ). How much should I be looking to spend? I realize mileage impacts this, but should I basically assume private party blue book is accurate? Thanks for any info.

Welcome! You are practically down the street from me. I’m in the Kingsgate neighborhood of Kirkland.

Unfortunately blue book is highly inaccurate compared to market prices for these trucks. The Tacoma literally has the highest resale value out of any vehicle in the US. If you are looking to buy close to new with low miles it may actually be nearly the same price to buy new from the dealer, as stupid as that sounds. That was the case when I bought mine new.

Hey, thanks! I'm near redmond ridge in Woodinville. That's good to know. I'm planning to use the costco auto program to understand prices as well. Let's see....

On a related note, any shops people recommend in the Seattle area for looking over a Tacoma prior to purchase from a private party?

I actually helped build the housing developments up there as a summer construction job in college.

For the pre-purchase inspection I used Toyota of Kirkland in the past, figuring the dealer knows the trucks well and what to look for. However I don’t think there would be much to find on a 2017 short of accident damage, other than if some of the TSBs were addressed.

I'd be weary of the whole Costco "deal". When i was looking for mine i was going to go with a dealer that did the Costco Deal. After talking with them (and the other dealer i ended up buying from) i was told that the Costco deal is basically that as long as truck is discounted $500 below whatever they list the truck at, then it qualifies as the Costco deal...

From my purchase experience (and as a costco member), i'd suggest you do a bit of research on nearby dealers sticker prices, and then try the costco deal on whichever one offers it.

Dealer i went thru didnt do the Costco deal, but their price was a little over 1k lower than dealer with Costco "Deal"...

I decided I only will buy the quicksand color. The CL truck I was looking at, the seller wouldn't budge on the price which was almost that of a new one ( to crashnburns point above ). A truck with similar options isn't locally sourceable via the dealer or easily via auto trader.

I talked to the costco auto dealer and he said that I can special order a 2018 paying Invoice+TDA+dealer fee(150)+Tax+licensing. All of these are stated and well known with no hidden costs. The TDA is probably the most unknown, but from reading the internets, it's impossible to avoid because it includes the cost of transportation to the dealer. But the dealer said that he can show me exact invoice prices on the build order to Toyota.

I know people get into hold backs etc, but for no haggling, the above seems like a good deal to me. Am I missing anything?

I started out looking into the Costco price which was $1,500 off MSRP, I told them that I could make that deal any day of the week so the dealer hooked me up with their internet sales person, suddenly the discount was around $2,200!

One more thing -- you should be aware of --the 17's DO NOT have the TSS system --18's do

I just bout a ‘17 brand new with all those things and it was literally only $1500 more than the used 2016 with 12k miles without all those packages. So may be worth it to spend the little bit of extra coin to just go new

If I wasn't clear, I was saying costco gives a good deal and I'm going for the 2018 over the 2017 because it's only little bit more ( which I learnt today unlike yesterday when I was sure a 2017 would be a much better deal ). If that makes me cheap, well so be it.

    Agree with you Cob_88.

Wow a lot of sarcastic people around here.

If that's lane departure warning etc yes. I've looked carefully and intently at the brochure but my feeble old brain doesn't remember acronyms and the like. I also know that the TRD Offroad with the premium package has leather for the first time - another reason to get the 2018.

I don’t feel like he was being sarcastic. He is saying that u seem to want to know all the ins and outs of what u r buying and the 2018 is a new truck so not everyone knows everything all the bells and whistles.

I second his post and say that if u r now set on an 18, do the legwork and/or talk to someone that actually has one if u r not going to do the investigating yourself. The 17 and 18 r essentially identical except for the TSS.

Since u want blind spot monitoring, alerts, etc. some of the research is something u should do. It’s a huge purchase and the fact that just about any well equipped 17 will nearly b the same price as an 18, that’s easy to c when u r researching prices. U will b seeing the same prices as us. Tacoma’s aren’t quite as easy to budge. People aren’t silly and they know how much these trucks sell for.

If u wanted an older one then maybe u could score a deal but the 17’s r either almost recently sold or gone so essentially they r still pretty new, so if u have the money u may want to think about this when purchasing.

Best of luck and understand that pretty much everyday someone posts questions similar to this on TW and when spending over $30K, some research is up to u to make a good informed decision. Most people on here r like me, not experts and can only offer what we know. Being understanding of this fact will get u much further on here. Good luck sir. Let us know what u get.

My bad for overreacting but I came here and posted precisely because I want to benefit from other people’s knowledge on the issue.

Just to clarify, the premium/technology package on the 2017 will have the items you listed. The 2018 TSS package they are referring to, has them too, with the addition of "Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Sway Warning System (SWS), Automatic High Beams (AHB) and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)". My wife's '17 CRV has Honda's version of TSS. Personally, I'd try to find a new '17 if you can, many of the new safety systems are too intrusive for my tastes. Not a deal breaker, but if I had the choice between a 2017 and a 2018, I'd opt for the 2017. Still quite a few new 2017's on the lots here in Colorado. Just my two cents, good luck with your search!

FWIW, I just traded a 2015 4runner for the taco and couldn't be happier.
