I have a 2017 SR 4x4 with utility package. Have filled the gas tank twice since purchase. Each time as the tank reached full and the pump nozzle shut off a significant amount of gas shot out the fill opening and ran down the side of the truck. This doesn't happen with our other vehicles when we fill up at the same pump. Is this an issue common to Tacoma’s?

I know filling my truck there really isn't room to top it off. Are you Just letting it stop by itself or you topping it off? If it stops by itself and shoots out gas first I'd try another pump if it happens again. Take it to dealer. They will check and also fill up the tank for free while checking it lol

I have a bad habit of topping it up with up to 2 extra litres after clicks off with no issue

I know it seems offensive, but are U guys setting the nozzle all the way in and down? The fill neck did seem a bit small but I've never had any issues.

I just hold the pump until the nozzle clicks off. I have always done that.

    this was my thought.

after the pump kicks off on me I always give it another quick shot. Never had problems spilling out.
    maybe try a different pump?

my previous car was a G35 coupe and the way the gas filler tube thingy was made (at an angle) I actually had to pull the pump about halfway out or the pump would kick off.
That made it very easy to over fill and spill down the side.

If you want to treat the symptom, just slow the pump down when you get to the last gallon or two on the fillup.

I had this happen when I went up high in elevation..back down to low..back high..low again.

Gas came out on the first fill up around 7k feet and then the next 2-3 fill ups regardless. Has not done it again though.

Many fill ups (15K miles) and I just let it click off and have never had an overflow. You have an issue and should take it in.

I know mines a 2nd gen but my truck does this more than 50% of the time. Never had another car or truck that has done this as frequently.

My wife’s old WRX did this, I traced it to the gas tank vent. The system needs to be closed (no venting) when running, but needs to be open & vented when you fill up. (This is the cycling you sometimes hear on the Tacoma when it’s been parked for some time). There was a purge valve on her tank that was stuck in the closed position. Could be the same thing on the Tacoma, some blocked vent line or broken purge valve. Other thing that can commonly create this is a full charcoal canister.

51k miles on my '16 utility pack. Never an overflow, but the pump shuts off fairly close to that point, with maybe 1L of volume remaining.
