Is there any advantage going with the Supra MAF or just getting a MAF kit like this that has no obstruction and using the newer MAF sensor??

Just putting this out there, you were getting more air before with the deck plate mod therefore running fat, unless you tuned that out. Try the elbow mod since you have a new airbox and see if going back to more air fixes the 5mpg drop. The elbow mod was the touted by toyota engineers to give more hp (dyno proven!)... after they were revealed the deckplate mod by Gadget, it was hush hush at first! the deckplate is different you pull in hotter air than the fender well, and it looks unfactory. Gadget proved the elbow mod gave the same power improvements w/o modding the airbox. He dyno'd three ways stock box, deck plate, elbow mod. If you ask him he'll tell you elbow mod all day.

I actually have something similar that I an going to do. I bought a cheap newer MAF and installed it but it was garbage so I went back to the Supra MAF cuz I didn't have time to mess with it. I have a OEM new style MAF now but have not installed it cuz I would rather drive the truck to the mountains to snowboard than fiddle with it. I will in the spring.
I think the newer style will be an advantage as I did the conversion on a '97 Landcrusier with an S/C I had and got about 2mpg better by doing this alone, telling me it was more accurate than the old style bullet design.

I got to thinking about your mileage drop. Reading back you have it in a bigger housing that the stock size, correct? 3"?

If that is the case that would explain your mileage drop. The air velocity will be slower in the 3" tube for any rpm vs stock MAF. This will put you in the wrong cell in the stock fuel map for the load and rpm. I bet your fuel trims are way out of whack and adding fuel, LTFT is prolly in the 20's. Can you read them?

I had to do a completely different fuel map tune to compensate for the Supra MAF.

I'm not sure were to look for that information. I have ordered a URD Mass Air Flow Fuel & Timing Calibrator, just waiting for it to come in. I hope that I can get everything tuned with that.

An app like Torque or a ScanGaugeII will show the short term and long term fuel trims. I have the URD FTC so that will tune what you need.

Edit, see you do have a wide band.

That makes sense, because he did replaced the whole tube section that's 2.5 feet long, but if you replaced just the MAF sensor section 8" long or so, would you have the same problem if you were using a 3" diameter section, or would I have to find the exact same diameter tube section as the old 1997 MAF section.
I trying to figure what's my best route to go without dealing with a piggy back, maybe a 3" diameter MAF section is not. MAYBE the KN tube for the 2000 years is better?

You would have the same problem if you used just an 8" section. That is how I am.
Your best route to not deal with a piggy back is stock diameter a la the K&N tube. If you look at the part #s for the MAF you will see they cover a lot of different vehicles/engine size. They accomplish this by varying the pipe inner diameter for the same sensor. The Spector part you posted above accomplishes this with the black sleeves.

Ok great information , I'm running a methanol kit with zero issues and 10 pounds of boost, no piggyback support, I want to upgrade the MAF tube section because the 1997 style is so restrictive for the supercharger, I wonder if the stock tube can be gutted and the newer MAF sensor can be fitted some how? Instead of trying to adapt a way of connecting the 3"
Spector, tube to the kn tube and the air filter,

Find a K&N tube for a later model 1st Gen, it has the smaller tube size and it accommodates the newer style MAF sensor. I had one, but cut it up to work on mine before I knew what it was.
The tube can be retrofitted to a stock air box.

So I am a bit confused, maybe someone knows this answer, from what I have read the ECU is designed for the specific amount of air flow through the specific tube read from the mass air sensor of that engine 2.75" tube size, etc, So does that mean that the ECU is designed for the restrictive air flow of the early 95.5-98 and if you put the same size tube but totally opened up or if you gutted the original tube with the increased air flow would it end up running incorrectly? Bad gas mileage, trims being off etc? There is such a huge difference in the tubes from stock to an aftermarket type like below. I don't want to add a piggyback or have to mess with adjustments of trims as it runs great the way it is, maybe I should just leave it alone for now?

Yes the ECU is designed for the restrictive air flow of the early 95.5-98 MAF. I can' say that you would have issues or not when converting to the newer style, just have to try it.
You can use the black sleeves in the spectre MAF kit (which sounds like you do not have) to decrease the inner diameter if you have issues.
I can only speak to what I did on my '97 LC that was supercharged, which was to replace the old bullet style MAF with a new housing, basically like your pic and it
ran even better and gained about 2mpg. 12mpg to 14 mpg in that heavy pig got my attention!

Any up dates on your MAF issues, Still on the fence whether to do this if I get more power from the supercharger Or if I’m just gonna have headaches and problems with it leaning out

I'm seriously considering putting my old one back on. I get a P0171 code almost every time I start my truck now.
It helped with throttle response, but I don't notice it now.

Use the MAF tube from a VOLVO S60 if it comes with a maf that is good it is the same as a 99+ MAF . Look on ebay for 2001 Volvo S60 and look at the pictures the one you will want has the bolt holes like your old style maf. This maf actually bolts up where your old maf did and is a perfect fit.You will still need to repin the connector I seen pictures here somewhere for a reference. I used this and it works perfect and looks stock $20-$30 on ebay. Look closely because they used different types but the one you need is totally obvious.
