Anyone have issues with their factory heated seats? My drivers side quit working a couple weeks ago, then would randomly work for a couple weeks, and then quit all together. Took the seat out and found the heated seat amp was slightly melted (Toyota PN 87501-0C020).

Easy fix right? Wrong....Toyota doesn't list that part as being on the 2016 or 2017 Tacoma. It does list it on the 2016/2017 Tundra though, but the part is discontinued. I am out of warranty by 4000 miles so I called Toyota for some assistance tracking the part down. Apparently it comes with the bottom heated seat pad and the entire wiring harness for under the seat ( Toyota PN 87510-04040).

Any chance someone knows of a salvaged 2016 or 2017 Tacoma with heated seats that they could go pull the part on and me buy it from them? I have only found one site that lists the amp as in stock, but they haven't returned a call or email yet to see if that is actually accurate.

Shouldn't that be covered under warranty?

He said in his post that he was already out of Warranty.

    Discontinued here.

Ya this is the same website I found it at. I sent them an email asking if they actually had one.

I would but they want $320 just for the part since its out of warranty. No telling what the total bill would be after install.

Install would be super easy if you skip swapping in the new seat bottom heating pad, just a few clips to unclip and reclip. Or just swap in the new amp provided your existing wiring is ok. Just one clip in that case.

Should plug it back in. See if it catches fire. Let the truck burn, collect insurance money and buy a new truck with new heated seats and warranty. Problem solved.

If that don't work, sue Toyota for that fire hazard of a box.

Personally I’d raise a fuss with Toyota corporate despite being out of warranty due to the nature of the problem. That connection fried due to a loose connection which raised the resistance at the joint. I’d be screaming about how my truck could have caught fire!

Do you have seat covers? I'm just wondering if maybe while doing an install something got jarred or the wire got stressed?
I would still contact Toyota even being out of warranty. While this is the first I've seen this, it would be a real problem if these units start failing on more trucks.

When did you purchase your 16? Is the warranty really that short?

January of 2016, but I drove 37k miles the fist year I had it. Then swapped jobs and drive like 4 miles a day now.

No covers completely, completely stock, and never disassembled.

I wish! It was in there with the seat turned on for like a week and never caught fire after it quit working lol.

Yeah, but sell the OEM parts after installing knockoff replacements first (grille, etc)

I am hoping for someone to know where one in a salvage yard is, and then just pay them a few bucks to mail me the discontinued switch so I don't have to buy the whole assembly. The wiring is all good, I checked it out when I took it all apart.

you would need to order the harness not the element. Do you know what could have could have caused it to short? And I actually have this part sitting next to me right now.

That picture shows one half of the issue, the terminal on the wire that connects to it is also compromised. I have seen this type of failure in my work many times in 35 years. Replace the terminal & cut back the wire to good copper, at least, if not replacing the whole harness.
