Did they replace the tow hitch?

 

Not applicable to me - I’ve got an aftermarket rear bumper

 

So my taco has been at the dealer for two days now undergoing a new frame. Its at a dealer in Toronto/Canada, my truck had a 6" lift going into the frame swap which has caused a few complications. I was also informed by the dealer that they are NOT replacing any extra parts free of charge (I was seeing people talk about getting free brake lines/LCAs and all that good stuff). Anything thats broken on my truck im responsible to pay for (material and labor).

So far theyve found a seized E-Brake cable, a broken outer tie rod, and broken steering rack end (What even is this?). They quoted me $800 to do the E-Brake cable and I said hell no. The tie rod and steering rack end I dont really have a choice.

I thought I would be able to re-use the shocks that came with my 6" BDS kit, but I was informed as they were taking it apart that I will not be able to re-use them on a truck at stock height. So it caused some more confusion at the dealer.. as of right now we've decided to leave the rear 6" suspension in place. This means the leaf spring spacers, 4" Lift blocks, and brake line brackets will all be kept on the rear. So my truck will look a little funny for a few weeks with 0" of lift in the front and 4" of lift in the rear.. oh well

So far thats all, I'm praying there are no additional issues. Also hoping they dont lose any of the parts associated with the 6" lift as theyre taking all the old stuff off. There are a lot of little washers/bolts that can be easily lost/forgotten.

A little bummed as well that I'm not getting any additional new suspension parts for free like some of the other members here suggested I would.

UPDATE: Called Toyota USA (cause my truck is american), who then called Toyota Canada, who then told Toyota USA they had to deal with it, and then I got a call back from Toyota USA. I was basically told that yes, all they have to do is change the frame and nothing else. But the guy I spoke to over the phone assigned me a case manager who will call me back in a day or so with more details and can possibly answer any specific questions I have regarding the frame case.

 

There must be a difference in Canada regarding what parts are replaced under the frame warranty.LCA's and a seized brake cable should be included.The dealer that I used has done over 400 frame swaps.They did it a lot differently than yours is being done.The engine stayed in place and the frame was dropped while the cab was on a lift.

 

My truck was rather heavily modded and they put it back together 100%.
The only thing I had to do prior to dropping it off was lop off the sliders which were welded to the frame.
I have a 1” body lift and dual transfer cases with a custom triple stick setup in the console.
There was no issues whatsoever.
The dealership even replaced the cab body mounts with an aftermarket poly set from energy suspension for me when they did the swap.
I guess l got lucky with a good tech?

The only weld-on thing that I’m out is the TC cam tab gusset kit which was permanently attached to the frame.

There were many new parts they didn’t need which ended up either in the bed of the truck or boxed up in the back seat.

After hearing mixed reviews on the swap execution here on TW I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive. In reality the experience for me was very satisfactory.

 

Hi. I live in Canada and have a 2009 stateside Tacoma (Purchased in 2011 from a Canadian Toyota Dealership). I saw the recall notice on the US Toyota website recently for Stateside vehicles and called my dealer and they advised that I have to go to a U.S dealership to have my frame inspected. I called Toyota US and they explained that its registered as a Canadian vehicle so my Canadian Dealership can inspect it. I am getting the run around on this now and not sure where to turn. any suggestions. Also, I had no issues getting my springs replaced when that recall went through.

 

Call Toyota of Canada, see what they say. Then have them call Toyota in the US while your on the phone.

 

Amazing, you had the experience that I wish I had haha. They refused to install my DB lift on the new frame (which I understand to an extent). But this whole "You gotta deal with the parts that rusted out yourself" nonsense is getting to me. They quoted me $350 for material and $450 for labor just to change out the E-Brake. That sounds real phishy

If I where you, I’d drive it to the dealer that @HomerTaco used down in PA. Take your rental home for a few weeks and then come back down get your truck without a bills for parts they broke while replacing your frame. The fact is, in the US, while replacing the frame if they brake something, it is their problem not yours. I know nothing about the class action lawsuit in Canada or if there is even one. You can always call the law firm that dealt with the class action in the US. Their number can be found somewhere on this website or in this thread. Don’t give them a penny. The dealer is making a sh*t ton off these frame replacements. They should be working for you. If not, go to another dealer. Someone will want your business.

This thread has been a great help in order to know how this process should go and how it could go and what to do if the dealer attempts to mislead & misinform Tacoma owners (me). Hunting season is now over and that clock is getting louder now so Im ready to take my truck in ( I have found 2 qualifying "perforations" in the frame and plenty of metal delamination in the rear frame / axle areas). I am in central Virginia and am wondering if anyone in/ around this area who has had the frame replaced could recommend what dealer they used. Also Im curious as to how/if i need to approach them as (if possible) I would like to have the shocks and any other recommended items by those on this forum installed when putting the truck back together with the new frame as to not have to pay for labor, obviously I would purchase the items , again just trying to avoid being charged for labor cost as they have to put the truck back together anyway.

 

Got it washed, so this is on this is on the new frame right below the drivers door.

 

I got a call from the Toyota National Headquarters and they basically told me that they are only legally responsible for the frame, anything else that Homer or other people got replaced was due to that dealer specifically helping out in their own way.

 

This is a brand new frame youre seeing rust on!?!

I guess its not terrible compared to some of the original frames after 1-2 years. Still, im surprised Toyota isnt offering a free oil spray/rust coating with the new frame.

 

It looks worse than it is 'cuz of the black. Still, I'm gonna get after it come spring when I put my lift in.
