Best Overland Bed Rack

does anyone know who makes this rack?

Surprised no one has posted the LEITNER rack yet, just installed mine and I LOVE it. Its the most overbuilt rack I've seen on a Tacoma so far, the rear load bars extend down to the floor of the bed and bolt directly to the frame. This gives the rack a static load capacity of 1,000lbs and a dynamic load capacity of 500lbs. I've yet to see any other racks rated this high but I could be wrong.

After cracking the ARE shell on my 1st gen and almost ripping off the topper on my 2nd gen I realized shells just aren't strong enough for what I need from them (able to carry 300lbs of gear while offroading HARD) and after looking at several other rack designs I wasn't really confident enough in any of them to load 300lbs and rip through whoops as none of them seemed to have proper cross bracing for dynamic loads. After speaking with the Leitner rack designer (Bernhard) it was clear this guy knew his shit, he's a full blown engineer and career fabricator, used to be the head of engineering for AMP Research.

The rack itself is incredibly light for its weight capacity, only weighs 68lbs! Plus its modular so I can slide the cross bars forward and still fit in my dirtbike, as well as being super easy to mount all sorts of accessories (rotopax, maxtrax, awning, Rtt etc.. it mirrors the bedrails system we already have). Also love the lockable storage box accessories (picture aboved).

I know RCI, CBI, plefrey etc all make great stuff. But this rack downright blew me away. Only drawback is I think its the most expensive rack setup for our truck :/

Yeah that's the harshest rating though, 500lbs dynamic is fine for the type of offroading most people do.

The 250 is the rating for what I'm interested in, doing donuts and powerslides with my RTT on top

Kinda makes me nervous that I couldn't find ANY other racks with an advertised offroad capacity. They all list static weight limits which doesn't really tell you much :/

 

Wilco Off-Road rack lists;
On road: 400 lbs
Light-duty off-road: 250 lbs
High-speed offroad: 150 lbs
Static (vehicle in park): 650 lbs

Might be because part of the rack is floating above the cab.

 

Never seen a Wilco rack but good on them for publishing the vital information. I think other rack companies don't want to publish an actual # just for liability purposes which I kinda understand. Guys like me will throw all sorts of abuse to a rack and you can't really test for every possible real life situation so I think they just avoid it all together by not giving you a # at all.

I was kinda shocked that I couldn't get straight answers on offroad capacity from a lot of BIG companies, I was still set on getting an actual shell but even when I contacted Snugtop about their "reinforced" shells that supposedly accommodate RTTs (I've cracked a shell before so I really wanted to know if the reinforced versions would avoid this) and all they could tell me is "500lbs max", when I asked does that mean 500lbs in offroad situations?? "NO"..... so whats the offroad rating? "Not rated, offroad at your own risk" (paraphrasing but it was something like that) totally avoiding giving me the info I actually need. I felt if I put even a 150lbs on the top of the shell and did a powerslide it'd crack just like my last one :/

At least Leitner gave me a #... 250. 250 is what I can put on and be assured I can offroad fast and hard and not fuck anything up indirectly. They also said that's mainly for weight on the actual cross bars (which in my case is just my 130lb rtt so I'm about 50% load capacity there). The weight on the sides (cargo box, max tracks and fuel) isn't as important to the 250lb rating although its not easy to give me a separate answer such as "150lbs on cross bars and 175lbs on the sides is still ok". But with bed stiffeners and front cross bracing I did I'm pretty confident on my setup while offroading fast. I have 300lbs fully loaded on the rack with only 130 of that on top via RTT.

Tent is pretty bad ass. To save others from paging, it's Mt Shasta Summit plus the 55" Summit awning off the back.

 

I spent a lot of time in this thread before deciding on having one made. I was able to pick what I liked about several models and incorporate them into this rack.

I wanted to still be able to reach into the and grab stuff, so low profile was ideal. Also, note the rotopax mount bar is curved inward slightly. This will make it harder for branches and other trail hazards to catch the can and rip it off. I can also reverse the monkey fist mounts to the opposite side, or have another set of mounts created if I want to hang other items.

 

I like idea of headache rack i wondered why you extended it abit past cab. Woukd this interfere with a shell? Or would the shell fit with just the cabrack

 

The shell would fit just fine.
I do however plan to make a cab/canopy rack combo as well.

 

The most expensive I've seen is Nutzo...which is a good name for their prices, especially when you add options.

 

KB Voodoo - on your premium bed racks - are the lengths of the uprights between the 18" & 10" interchangeable? or not because of the angles created? I'm just thinking if I start with the 18" and then also want a 10" for other times is that a whole new rack?

Anyone knows of a rack that would fit over the factory bed cover for a 3rd gen short bed?
