No shit really? No idea the 4x4 ECU's did that. Can't you just unplug the transfer case position sensors so the ECU can't tell if you're in 4Lo?

I don't know I have never had an ADD or auto 4x4 truck to test it on. The ADD truck have a separate 4x4 "computer", really a relay pack to make sure the ADD engages. The manual hub auto trucks probably just went off the position sensor on the case so yeah that would likely work.

Can anyone with a 2.7l 4Cyl 4x4 help me out? I have no idea where the hell this dipstick is supposed to mount to. Both the supports are just floating there nowhere to bolt to.

This is the only way I could physically get the tube in so I'm not sure if it's right.

Okay. I tried starting the truck, it started up fine no issues there. Then I put the truck into drive, no issues. I put it into 4HI, I hear this terrible grinding noise. I started the truck again in 2HI but put it into reverse. No problem I can see the output shaft spinning.

I put it into park from reverse... terrible grinding noise.

Shit. Any idea what it could be? I'm at a loss for words.

Your truck refuses to 4 wheel drive.

    Give it to me.

Sorry, back to your truck. I’m sure someone will have something helpful, that someone isn’t me.

yeah but i can do 50mph with the stick. Go fast man :burnrubber:

I find it a pain that i have to constantly stop to put it back in high range.

so did you know for sure if the tranny was 100% good before you got it?

I bought it from a junkyard, they told me it was tested but who really goddamn knows. The fluid that came out of it was black like motor oil but there were no metal shavings or anything. Fluid wasn't burnt just black. I had a whole thread about it months ago general concensus was that the tranny was fine, but not well maintained.

well it sounds like a syncro is fucked.

    However..

Where is the grinding coming from? Tcase or the tranny?

I can't tell. It's coming from the front maybe?

It could be that I didn't fill it full of fluid. I poured about 6 liters in before starting the engine and running the tranny to circulate fluid, that's when I heard the grinding. I poured the full 2 gallons or 7.5 liters in there from the bottles that I had.

can't hurt to check again the fluid level.

Also if you have a spare hand to shift you could get under the truck to see if its the tranny or the tcase.

Kind of scared to shift it again. Guess I'll never find out what it is if I don't though.

Even bought all the DOM tubing through them, cheaper than anything local. Get on the mail list and they'll send 20% off coupons once in a while.

You should only shift the t case if the trans is in neutral, if the tcase was in neutral you'd get brutal grinding if the trans was in park. I think your trans is fine but start everything in 4hi for now since you have no rear shaft.
