my parents drove grand marquis, country squire, and now a honda odyssey, all for 15+ years.

They live in brooklyn NY and the cars get so banged up that 1) resale value is crap 2) why would you want to buy a new car and have it dented within a week. So they keep their cars forever.

The ford/mercury both had multiple things rebuilt to last 15+ years. Their last was a 1990 grand marquis they got rid of this fall. That thing bucked and kicked at a stop light like it would stall but they were going to keep that clunker going since it doesn't pay to get a new vehicle. I guess maybe quality doens't necessarily dictate why someone keeps a car for over a decade.

The 2000 odyssey has only had brakes and tires replaced, and still sounds like the first day they bought it. It just looks like it's been through a demolition derby. Damn thing will probably be the last vehicle they own at this point.

I had a 98 RAV4 for 17 years (2 door, soft top, 5 speed MT). Other than regular maintenance items, I had to change the vacuum switching valve on the EGR and front wheel bearings. I kept it so long because it was fun to drive, very dependable and over those 17 years, I did not need or want anything different.

Yeah I think there is a lot more info that needs to go with that list as you said maybe the type of people that keep stuff long favor those vehicles to begin with, could also be age groups, people that take care of them, etc... It doesn't seem like it, but even though I bought my car used I have already had it for 19 years.

I had to replace the muffler a few times on mine, too. And the fuel pump, which sucked. Living in the rust belt I had to do some considerable rust patching over the years, too. Mine was also on the original clutch when I sold it at 287k. That Z motor was awesome, though. Put it into 5th gear, doing 50, and accelerate up a hill.
I did many foolish things in that truck; lots of abuse, but she kept on ticking.

Edit- HA! I knew I had a picture on here somewhere.

the 3.5 is fine, it just needs a better trans map that what is on the Tacoma currently. just like when the Tacoma had the 4.0 in it compared to the 4runner. same engine different trans and mapping.

actually the 4.0 was better in the Tacoma than the 4runner. driving the old 12 Tacoma vs the 14 4runner, the engine was all around better in the Tacoma.

Kings, 275/70/17, a few custom items, lots of Meso mods.
Not in rust belt but it's rusting pretty bad. Mine is the lowest model you could get. Only s 4sp. Revs a little high and I live in the mountains. Never have to downshift on hills even with a load of wood.

yep the 10% that have the issues/worst problem with Toyota run to YT or the internet. the other 90 that don't have issues could care less about making a post about having a trouble free vehicle.

I've had issues with Toyota's before, but since 1981 ive had 1-2 issues with any Toyota that I have owned. and yes I had no desire to post about the multi years that I had no issue with some models.

    1) I owned a 1991Mr2 from 2002 to 2008 (would still have it but some guy smashed into me and totaled it)
    2) then I owned a 2007 second gen 2-door Tacoma from 2009 to 2017.

--I took the MR2 to the shop twice
    1) Engine was running weird, mechanic spotted that it was the spark plug. He didn't charge me for the time, and then I just changed it myself.
    2) the exhaust has a rust hole, and the local muffler shop just wielded it for $40 dollars.

I drove it like crazy, and putt 120K miles on the car. I paid $4K for the car.

--I never took the Second gen Tacoma for the shop for any reason. I never performed any of my own service work either.

I bought it, used, with 60K miles. When I traded it in, it still ran perfectly at 198K miles.

I am loyal Toyota customer for life.

In between all my different cars, I borrowed my father's 1996 Honda Prelude. It overheated constantly, and the head warped.

I know anecdotal evidence doesn't offer true illuminating perspective but here's mine. My family has only owned Toyotas or Hondas. We're asians and asian people in my experience buy asian cars or German if they're wealthy. We've had no major issues with any of them. My sister drives the family's old Honda Pilot and it's got 225,000 miles on it. This is not because of asian to asian brand affinity or whatever. We just can't stand to deal with any car issues. Until domestic manufacturers can display a CONSISTENT and extended phase of reliability, we probably will still buy foreign. That said, imo, Ford seems to have been stepping up their game recently. If I wanted a full size it would be the Tundra or the F150.

I JUST saw a black one up the street, reminded me to google a pic and drop it here. I honestly would have no idea if they were sold here. But wow... it is ugly.

And to be fair the same could be said about the 1st gen quad cabs. I don’t think anyone got it right until later on.
