Break-in Period

When I got the truck the Sales guy said that the break-in period is 3,000 miles not going over 3,000RPM.

The tech said "drive it like you stole it"

My wife said "drive it normally"


Did you break-in your brand new truck? If so, what did you choose and why?

 

Shoot, first thing done was donuts in a snow covered parking lot like 16 year olds. Then it was pretty easy normal driving from then on.

500 miles I was really nice, then just like normal.

 

There's a section in the owner's manual about break-in period (at least in my 2010 manual). Basically no high revving, towing, or staying at a constant RPM range for the first 1000 miles.

It's also a good idea to do your first oil and filter change after the break-in period.

 

The toyota tacoma owners manual says wait 500 miles to tow, 1000 before its fully broken in. Thats what I would go by.

 

I did see that in the manual and followed those rules. Just like to hear what people do. I know with my old 85 monte carlo I put a new 350 I had built and my friend who is big into old school cars said to beat the every living *(#)@*# out of it right off the bat. Did that, got 220k miles and never had a single issue.

Drove my truck like normal and didn't do any full throttle till about 1,000 miles on the odometer.

 

1000 Miles or roughly 1800 km, and I revved it up a little high after that, but generally I keep it low and drive it easy and plan to continue doing so (when I can help it )

 

The key isn't driving like a pansy and taking it easy, it's varying the RPM alot and not holding one still for awhile, which includes higher RPMs.

I would shoot for 500-1000 miles then do an oil/filter change and call it good.

 

The truck'll "talk" you as well. I'm at almost 770 miles (6-cyl), and my baby's letting me know that more gas pedal is OK.

It's nice to start pushing that 4-liter after a 2.7 stickshift Prerunner. Next year, TRD supercharger!

 

I don't know about 2012's but this is what my 2006 manual says:
Drive gently and avoid high speeds.Your vehicle does not need an elaborate

break- in. But following a few simple tips

for the first 1600 km (1000 miles) can add

to the future economy and long life of

your vehicle:Avoid full throttle acceleration when

starting and driving.Avoid racing the engine.

Try to avoid hard stops during the first

300 km (200 miles).Do not drive slowly with the manual

transmission in a high gear.Do not drive for a long time at any

single speed, either fast or slow.Do not tow a trailer during the first 800

km (500 miles).

 

what does driving "Do not drive slowly with the manual transmission in a high gear." do

 

Keeps you from lugging the engine.

Bought mine in May 2009 from a dealer in Charlotte, NC. Flew up, drove mostly 2 lane highways (including Tail of the Dragon) back to Memphis - avoided interstate/steady cruising, about 650 miles. Almost 9 years later, no problems, never had to add oil. Works for me.

 

Someone show me scientific evidence that cars manufactured in the last two decades (other than high performance vehicles) need to be “broken in”.

It’s not 1950 anymore.
