Do I need hub rings or caps for these wheels?

Just installed a set of Procomp wheels and new tires last night. I cant tell if it's just me or the wheels are not centered on the hubs. They are not quite as tight of a fit as I was hoping for.




As you can see I have a ~1/8 gap on one side of the wheel and none on the other for all 4 tires.

I Think this is throwing off the balance of the tires and need to fix it ASAP. Anyone run rings with their steel wheels and which ones?

What size?

Alluminum vs plastic?

Looking on Amazon, I can't figure out which one to get.

what was the center bore of the wheels you bought? it should tell you in the specs.

Toyota has a ~106.25mm center but many aftermarket wheels will have 108mm to allow greater fitment.

some use rings and hopefully one will chime in.

Said 108mm.

So that helps a little, I'll measure my hubs
with a caliper in a few minutes and dubble check.

 

Are you using lugcentric lug nuts?

I'm using the OEM lug nuts, they are concentric so I think those are lug-centric?

No shank or anything just like a 60 degree bevel where they contact the wheels.

 

I have Procomp wheels on mine and I used the plastic hubcentric rings. Best money I've spent in awhile. Night and day difference for me.

 

Just measured my hubs, looks like im at 106.1mm and the wheels are 108mm, im using the OEM lug nuts that are just like this:


I believe these are lug-centric because there conical, so will I need new style of lug nuts and a set of hub rings?

The "shank" style may work....?

 

I had to use Quarter inch wheel spacers and longer studs to clear the front calipers did you have that problem? Pretty sure they are the same wheels I got 51 series

 

Same issue here, I solved it by grinding my calipers with an angle grinder.

Then painting.


They clear fine now.

Just got off the phone with DT, they balanced my new tires/wheels via a "cone" on the inside of the wheel. So that would mean they would be balanced for hub centric mounted...

Now they are not hub-Centric on the truck, they are lug-centric... So then they are balanced the incorrect way, there is a different center point...

 

They are balance properly. Most vehicles are not Hub centric. Some semi trailer are Hub centric. Stud centric balances are expensive. American tire supposed me through college (DeAnza. But didnt learn a thing still a grease monkey) if the space bothers you get caps.

 

Yea, I'm probably just being too anal about it... I just want to make sure that $800 in Wheels & tires are not being worn unevenly...

 

If it rides fine then it is fine in terms of tire balance at least. Still gotta make sure your alignment is good.

You should be able to center the wheel better with the lug nuts. Take the weight of the truck off the tire, loosen your lug nuts to where they are snug and just barely making contact with the wheel. Shake the whole wheel and tire and try to snug the lug nuts a little more by hand or lightly with a socket/tire iron each time you shake the wheel. Then torque to spec. I'm thinking the lug nuts didn't properly seat in the holes on the wheel.

 

That's what I'm thinking. I'll center the wheel to the hub strictly via the concentric lug nuts a little better. The trouble is finding a tire shop that will balance off of the lugs. I called pro comp customer support and they said the balancing needs to be done that way because the wheel is lug-centric. (Not off of the hole in the middle, like everyone does)

BTW, how do you like having Rino-liner on the bottom 3rd of your panels? I want to do that too soon. Looks really good.

 

Previous owner had it done. It's held up pretty good in the 3yrs I've owned it. I can only imagine what it would look like with out it. Definitely helps cut down on the rock chips and scratches. I'd have it done on my next truck.
