How do you they sign up and not get away with doing shit?

 

MPG is actually surprisingly good. Unloaded in mixed driving on back roads during the summer I get 16-18mpg's with it. During the winter with the plow on it drops to around 8-12, but that includes longer warm-up times to get it off the choke & low MPG situations like plowing.
Carb is a 2bbl Holley 2300 and it actually doesn't do too bad with fuel boiling. It does eventually evaporate, though, so if I park it for more than an hour I need to pump the throttle once or twice to prime it. Fires right up, though. Almost never makes a complete revolution before it catches and goes.

Works great, but every now and then it does spit a really angry bee onto your chest.

Do you notice a huge lag in acceleration with the A/C on?

 

Lol, I was being obtuse. The truck has no AC, just wing windows. It's an old joke among classic car guys.

 

Monte Carlos were a hell of a car though! I used to want one so bad when I first started driving.

I've got a story for you about the at-risk kids...

This was in 2001-2002, when my dad was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island (My dad was in the Navy from 1982-2007). I attended my first two years of middle school at Oak Harbor Middle School in Oak Harbor, Washington.

To be fair, I was actually quite chummy with one kid in this class. We were the same age (both 12 at the time), and he introduced me to Playboy magazine.

There was this one scumbag named William. He was incredibly short, wore his black hair in a small ponytail, and talked like a New York mobster...

A nonprofit organization called Summit Assistance Dogs, which trained dogs for people with disabilities, worked with the at-risk kids to get them on the right track. I was quite jealous, since I was a good student who loved dogs, and a lot of these young hoodlums could care less. I still hung out with the women who ran the program after school though, doing everything from helping load the van to walking the dogs.

One such dog was a friendly male Pit Bull mix named Cedar, and William worked with Cedar regularly. He developed quite an attachment to Cedar, which is understandable. William incorrectly assumed that Cedar was his dog, and was very possessive of him. One day after school, I got permission from both the assistant principal of the school and the women from Summit Assistant Dogs to walk Cedar through the halls of the school as part of a socialization/training exercise. Cedar got all the attention he could ever want, and one of the people who approached asking to pet him was a girl I had a crush on. Totally a Win/Win situation!

If I had to guess, this is probably how William found out I was playing with and walking his dog. A 12-year old boy walking a brown Pit Bull in school around isn't exactly low-profile, and people (especially gossip-happy middle school kids) talk.

One day, I was eating lunch in the cafeteria with a few of my friends. All of a sudden, William walks up to our table with one or two of his thuggish friends. He looks right at me and says something like "I want you to stop playing with my dog!"

I look at him and ask something like "What the hell are you talking about?!?!"

He says "Cedar."

I go off on a typical drawn-out rant, explaining how I love animals, the volunteer ladies let me play with and walk the dogs, and that Cedar is not his.

William was not happy, and continued to act as though he wanted to fight. I stood up, looked down at the little prick, and said something like "Yes, I walk Cedar. Is that a problem?"

Even then I was much larger and much taller (and presumably much smarter) than William. At the same time I stood up, two of my friends also stood up from their lunches. One of them was my best friend Doug (who ended up joining the Marine Corps right out of high school), and the other was a girl named Samantha (a tomboyish skater chick who I had a crush on for the entire 7th grade). William pretty much stopped dead in his tracks and stormed off...

Go back and read that last paragraph again...

Three 7th graders, two of whom are relatively large boys (and of those two boys, one who was a future Marine)...

Would you have fucked with us, over a dog that wasn't even yours?!?!

This was the same friend who got kicked out of a bar for excessive seafood farts...

Back when he was still living with his parents, he got home one night totally hammered and really had to take a shit. He found his way to the bathroom, but was too drunk to find the toilet. He simply pulled down his pants and dropped a deuce in the middle of the bathroom floor. He then pulled his pants back up and went to bed. He was woken up the next morning, incredibly hungover, by his hysterical mother screaming at him over the dump he didn't remember taking in the middle of the upstairs bathroom!

 

Chris Cornell concert a few years ago. They were serving strong doubles, and 2 at a time. Few rounds later, last thing I remember was drinking in the lobby. Woke up in jail, sleeping on a mat, much vomit coving me. Asked the dude with the clipboard what was up, said I was in the drunk tank and could leave whenever I wanted. Fuck. Yes.

Phone and keys were in a bag, but battery was dead and wallet was nowhere to be seen. Shit. Long walk at 5:00am back to my apartment, maybe 8-9 miles. Head down soldiered on. About 6 miles in I flagged a taxi down, he didn't even bother to ask. Took me home, grabbed some cash out of my apartment and gave him a $20 tip. That was 4~ years ago, still don't know what happened. My credit cards had some interesting charges, but nothing of any consequence or clues. Never drank like that before or since. Currently in a dry stage, of can't handle her booze so I don't drink either.

Edit: I regret leaving the concert early. The show, here in Seattle, was a big deal. Lots of important seattle musicians showed up, some even played with him. Now he's gone, and I remember watching about 3 songs

I'm guessing you cooperated with the cops who brought you in, since you were allowed to leave the jail as soon as you woke up?

 

I've got some....experience... with law enforcement. It was just a stand alone drunk tank. Not actually jail, but looked just like it. Luckily I parked in an obscure lot, so no worries there.

 

Worst thing that ever happened to me as a result of drinking was...

Doing a flight of top shelf tequila in about 10 minutes (equivalent to 5-6 shots), plus 5 or 6 beers and a car bomb over the next few hours...

I ended up passing out on the front steps!

Luckily, this was at the bar where I work as a barback (I was there for the debut of a friend's Nirvana tribute band), and the bouncers there like me. Instead of kicking me out, one of the bouncers escorted me up the stairs and waited with me until my Uber arrived!

Just got drenched in the rain chatting with one of Doylestown's parking enforcement guys...

This particular guy is about 58 years old and was born in Scotland, though he was born to at least one American parent and has been living stateside for most of his life. As such, he's an American citizen.

He is a very nice guy, and also a rarity because he's the only parking enforcement official you just can't hate!

He's fun to chat with, and loves old cars. He is also willing to look the other way in certain situations, like when you have your Tacoma in a posted NO PARKING zone, in the wrong direction on a one-way street, for like 30-40 minutes, so you and your fellow barbacks can load it with furniture...

At the same time, he doesn't screw around when it comes to people who blatantly violate the rules. I'm talking about the douchebags who park in handicapped spots, the assholes who park in yellow and red zones, and the people who overstay the time limit in certain spots...

Also, I showed him some of the high-tech stuff I put in my Tacoma, and now he wants dashcams for his personal vehicle and his parking enforcement vehicle!

 

What is that, anyway? Looks like an old slot machine or an even older cash register...
