Scangauge Steering Column Mount

I’ve seen all that Google has to offer, but trying something different than anything I’ve come across.

I want to keep it on top of the steering column. Velcro just isn’t sturdy enough. I’ve thought of opening it up and bolting it into the shroud, which would work great, but would be a pain to take off to let someone use to read codes. It would basically be permanent.

I guess I am trying to think of something stronger than Velcro, but that can be removed easily. Like the way Legos snap together.

Anyone tried anything like this? Do I need to just buy some Legos and make something?

 

I have the blendmount that mounts to the rear view mirror. The scangauge mounts to the right angle blendmount piece with "velcro type" stuff that has a bunch of tiny plastic balls. It's very secure. All you would need is a right angle piece of metal and some of that plastic ball stuff. Bolt the angle piece to the column clamshell and you're done.

 

I use a flat 1" bungee cord - SG on top of steering column.

 

Thanks. Building a bracket has crossed my mind, I kind of tried with plastic but didn’t like it, and so has the bungee idea (although I was thinking of using braided fishing line). I will keep thinking, something genius will hit me soon!

 

You don't like the pillar RAM mount location?

 

I just want one place to have to look to see gauges. I’d say the pillar mount would be my next choice though.

 

What's not sturdy enough about the velcro? Is the adhesive not staying stuck to the column or to the SC?

These are cheap enough. Cut one down a good bit for appearances and it will hold on to your SC just fine.

 

The Velcro May hold, it’s just not looking good after a short time. But I used what was in the box, I’ll probably try some industrial Velcro brand stuff, maybe that’s stronger.

 

Super strong magnets? May be another idea. Keep it clean.

 

You are a genius. Where would one buy super strong magnets? I only have a few on my fridge that slide of and onto the floor just about everyday..

 

I bought some very small ones at Home Depot. They are strong as hell. Bet you could find bigger ones that are even stronger.

 

Thank you! Do you think they'd be strong enough if I put one under the steering column shroud and the other inside of the Scangauge? I have never seen magnets like this before. I would probably glue them in their respective places with a dab of superglue or something..

Also: electronics people, would having a magnet inside of a Scangauge damage anything? Probably a dumb question, but I know nothing about electronics.

 

They should be.
Can use epoxy too. Will be more permanent.
I would take the steering column plastic off, glue a couple/three under there and then epoxy a few/couple to the bottom of the SG.
When I added my RAM mount ball to the back of my SG, I 2 part epoxied it. Holds great.

 

I am thinking the same thing. I would probably take the Scangauge apart though and have them inside (glued to the bottom plastic piece). My only concern is damaging the electronics with these things so close to the circuit board.

I mounted mine using the command refill for those Command Hooks. The one where you pull the tab and it removed the hook with no residue. Plus with extras, if you do have to replace it, you just pull the tab (comes off clean) and replace with another.

Originally I used these 3M scotch extreme velcro like fasteners but it raised the Scangauge a bit and kind of kinked the wire, thats why I moved to the Command refill strips.
