Keep in mind this is in Canadian Dollars, not USD. 12k CAD comes out to around 9k USD.

Thanks for all the advise gentlemen!! I love the black trim he put on the front and sides.
The mileage is in kilometers and Canadian dollars.
It sucks that tacos here on the west coast are priced so much higher than the east coast!! But I really want one!!!
I don’t think I’ll buy if he can’t budge from $12k. He originally posted it for $15k!
Hope to hear more advise guys. Thanks again for taking the time to read this thread.

I answered in a canadian perspective, as I am canadian myself :)

The reason is because the climate is much better on the west coast. On the east coast, the trucks are suffering from the harsh winter and are mostly eaten up by the salt and chemicals put on roads during winter

    same for this one:
check the frame for rust, then check if truck is mechanically sound and in an overall good condition (body and interior wise)

CAD $13k is still a premium price, so I would expect it to be in very, very good condition.
Mileage is much better on this one.
The only thing, though, is that it isn't 4x4. So for me, that would lower its value. Unless you don't mind it being 2WD, but meh I'd prefer it to be 4x4 at this price

    haha, that's ok :p

That's a lot (even in CAD) for the '03 prerunner, even though it's a double cab.

Some of us Tacoma owners think our trucks are worth a million bucks. But our emotional attachment doesn't add any objective value to what are becoming very old vehicles. I still love mine though, right to the bitter end.

You are right. We all think our cars are worth more than they really are. If that car is priced under $10k then that would be a fair price?
Would it be insulting to offer $6000? It is a 2003 but on the other hand there is only 212km.
How do you guys negotiate? Before inspection or after an inspection?

99.9999999999999% of vehicles will never see a pre-sale inspection. I negotiate for a living, both with banks and with people.

Rule of thumb, people are a pain in the ass to negotiate with. Everything is personal, anything lower than full price is insulting, facts and logic have no bearing. A seller, in his mind has the best thingy in the history of thingies. He's doing you a favor just by humoring the mere thought that you might own his thingy. You should probably let him sleep with your wife as a thank you.

Get the idea? So negotiating 101. The asking price is higher than he expects and 2 steps higher than value. Your job is to get it at less than value, which will be 3 steps lower than asking price. Here's the tricky bit, finding the sweet spot. Think of 4 steps below asking as a minimum offer unless you KNOW he is in a bad spot. 4 steps is almost insulting but not quite. It's right on the lIne.

A seller is generally willing to go 1 to 1.5 steps. You want him to step towards you at least 2, but insult him and he won't go more than 1/2. Rookies and laypeople think you should start at 1/2 asking and you'll land at 3/4. Starting at half only pisses the seller off and his first step just went from 4/5 to 15/16. And he will dig in his heels at that point. If you start reasonably the seller will often respond reasonably. As long as both sides continue moving towards each other the have good odds of meeting

So how do you decide what's reasonable for value? Hold on to your hat, it's by learning FACTS! Not subjective opinions, not looking to see what people are asking on craigslist, objective facts. Banks use 1 of 2 sources, at least in the us. Kbb and nada, nothing else unless it is a unique item, which a tacoma is not. Here is where the wailing begins and the flames get higher as the tacoma-verse screams that "up here a tacoma is worth WAY MORE than book value!" Except it's not.

NADA and KBB don't dictate what a vehicle is worth. It is a summary of what they have actually sold for in your area. In other words ask yourself "if everyone in the area has paid $10 for an identical item, why should I make myself pay $20?" imagine going to the bank and arguing "I want a bigger loan because j really like the color!" Banks don't care, neither should you.

Asking price of comparative vehicle is absolutely meaningless. If everyone asks for a million dollars, but everyone sells at 1.50, the value is 1.50. That's not to say that no one pays asking price, there's always someone out there that just HAS to have that item. On the seller side I've seen it a lot. I've made a lot of money because of it. It's a good thing, when your selling.

They fall into auction mentality that they will own it despite any common sense, period. Odds are you are not looking at a one in all of existence vehicle. They made hundreds of thousands of them. Find the value, decide what your maximum price is and stick to it. It's not anyone else's money, so asking what they would pay is meaningless. It's easy to spend imaginary money, just ask the govt. Once you reach that number, walk. I fact walk before you reach it. The sight of money leaving can spark a chase.

Good luck, have fun, and remember how many other vehicles there are that you could buy instead. But also remember that paying value IS NOT A BAD THING. You paid what it's worth, it's not the end of the world. If you buy a soda for $1 you don't get upset that walmart wouldn't take 80 cents. Getting a deal is fun, paying value is fine, don't overpay for no reason .

Thanks for the awesome advise Indy!
You sound like someone who is an expert in negotiating and a mind reader!!
I have a pretty tight budget so will wait a bit longer until he lowers it again. He lowered it from $15k to $12k in a couple of weeks. So I’m sure he might do it again. If it’s sold I guess then it’s not meant to be for me. You’re right, be patient and that’s not the only Tacoma.
    Thanks

NADA and KBB are just corporations throwing shit at a wall and hoping it will stick. When I sold my 85 KBB and NADA said one number and I still got six times that amount. I had a few LOL calls when people brought up well book value, um yeah well go find one at that price.

Download an app like cssmart. It will lwt you search statewide or multiple states or I assume Canada. You’ll get an idea of what trucks go for in your region and its the best way I found to look at used cars. Easier than any website I tried. It lets you save favorites and such. Paying for the app is worth it for that reason.

You can get a better idea of how people are adjusting for mileage and features, but you’ll need to test drive some trucks to see what you want.

The first truck i test drove was a gold double cab with a body lift. It was stuck in 4hi and would not shift back to 2wd. It had 160k miles, the door panels were covered in grease and the guy was asking $14000 usd. No thanks, but it was a good lessen because it made me become more familiar with what I wanted.

You need to know whether you want 4x4 or prerunner first. Then you need to decide if you want the rear locker if you are getting a 4x4. You’ll need to decide if you want the features that come with an sr5.

If its lifted, you’ll want to know the difference in different types of lifts and whether it is body or suspension. There is a lot to consider. Read up like you’ve already bought while you are looking and it will help you know what to look for and what to avoid. Check for rust on the frame.

Get a carfax report when you start to get serious. It saved me from buying a car with 100k roll back that was in otherwise great shape. Might be best to get one of the multi vehicle packages once you know you are going to be buying soon.

That's because there is a difference between an average seller, and an enthusiast. Enthusiast will only sell to other enthusiasts and that's how they get the price they want, by selling to someone who wants it just as much as you don't want to get rid of it.

The double cab, 3.4L , 4x4 Tacoma’s are the most expensive first gen combination you can buy

At 9k USD you can get it for below that since it states OBO. At that price your under KBB value and can replace a motor cheaply anyways...

    Just my 2cents

In California that first double cab in that configuration of options wouldn’t last more than a day in the market here in Southern California

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I should stick with a prerunner since I won’t be off roading at all and keep costs down. But definitely double cab so the kids can fit and a v6.
So much to learn if I really want to make sure I spend my money well!
Do you think it’s safe to buy a rebuilt even if it passes a professional inspection?
