Did the mods really temporarily block you from liking posts and threads?

I've gotten yelled at by the mods before for various things, but when I went overboard with my "random story" threads, the mods realized that many other members (and the mods themselves) actually enjoyed reading them, and combined them all into this thread. The rest is history!

I have had a couple of threads deleted by the mods, one time because somebody else made a political comment. I've also had comments disabled on another thread because someone starting a 2nd Gen/3rd Gen fight...

Before they knew I had Aspergers, I was threatened with a ban for "PD bashing" after going off on a rant about being harassed by police.

Haven't had a problem since though...

I honestly do not have a problem with current regulations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regarding vehicle registrations. As a light truck owner, I have to pay a bit more than a passenger vehicle owner, but I paid $129 for a 2-year registration...

My biggest gripe is not even the annual safety inspection. It only costs like $20, and I take such good care of my truck that it's never failed a safety inspection. I would not be sad if Pennsylvania abolished the annual inspection altogether though.

My biggest gripe would be the emissions testing. My truck has always passed emissions with flying colors, but in Pennsylvania, a check engine light means the vehicle automatically fails (Back in 2015, I found out the hard way that a malfunctioning horn will cause the check engine light in my Tacoma to come on; Call me stupid, but I'm pretty sure a horn has absolutely nothing to do with the engine).

Everytime I bring my truck in for inspection (it's always been at the dealer or my dad's mechanic), I worry they are going to find some stupid little thing to fail my truck for. Also, I prefer having my dad's mechanic inspect my truck, but my local Toyota dealer is much more convenient because I get a free loaner for a day and the dealership is minutes away from my work.

Scheduling stuff like oil changes and other routine maintenance is already time-consuming enough with regards to dropping off my truck.

I am just fed up with having to bring my truck in for an emissions test it doesn't even need when other states only care that your vehicle is registered and insured...

I heard about a trend in Connecticut where residents of that state are using a loophole to registered their vehicles in Maine so they can avoid Connecticut's annual vehicle "property tax," as well as its ludicrous annual emissions testing law.

I paid $129 to register my '10 RC 5-lug for two years (2017-2019). I pay about $60 annually for emissions testing and safety inspection.

If Maine's annual registration fees are the same as or more expensive than Pennsylvania's, I won't bother.

However, if it is considerably cheaper, I might just go for it.

On top of that, my grandma owns a lake house in Maine. While most people who use this loophole have to settle for a P.O. Box, I have a legit physical address owned by a blood relative!

Look other states, Pennsylvania does not enforce motor vehicle laws on vehicles registered outside the state. For example, there's somebody living in Doylestown with a 2006ish Honda Accord that is registered in Vermont. The inspection sticker expired over a year ago, but the registration stickers on the plates are still good and he is left alone...

As long as you have valid plates, LEOs in PA don't seem to give a shit!

I also have an aunt and uncle who live in Florida, which is known for titling pretty much anything with wheels as long as your money is green!

I am going to do some research tonight and see if either Florida or Maine will allow me to register my vehicle without getting a license in either of those states!

FYI, my uncle lives in California, has a California driver's license, and all of his vehicles except his one VW Bus and the '69 Airstream trailer are registered in California...

Kermit, the '71 VW Bus, is exempt from smog in California so that's where he is registered. Sweet Pea, the '77 Westfalia, is not exempt from smog, but won't pass smog. My uncle registered Sweet Pea as an antique at the home of his brother in Texas, and the camper is registered in Texas too.

I would love to pay lower registration and not have to deal with the hassle of getting my truck inspected every year!

What do you guys (and gals) think?

 

I dont know man...I dont play any games when it comes to my truck and the law.

 

Maine has a heavy excise tax.

 

You have to pay excise tax here on top of reg. fee, I'd expect to pay 130-150 per year on a vehicle 5 years or older. My truck new was almost $800 to register. Only a few counties do emissions testing.

 

And I pay $140 annually to register. No emissions testing.

I'd not recommend flirting with the law. You're hurting your own state revenue.

 

Like I said, I'm gonna do some research.

I believe in using every legal way possible to get by with paying as little money as possible!

 

I met a guy at a car show in Conmecticut who had a 1993 Chevy S-10 with a big block V8 im the bed! This was back in 2015. The truck would not pass emissions with engine, and it was too new to register as an antique, so the owner registered it Maine with plans to transfer it back to Connecticut once it was old enough to be registered as an antique...

 

So you want to pay tax/registration fees to a state where you'll get ZERO in return?

 

I don't consider legally avoiding Pennsylvania state inspection "getting zero in return."

 

I stopped caring about my home state's feelings a long time ago...

Even worse than vehicle-related laws and regulations are the Capone-era alcohol laws that only succeed in pissing off residents...

Rich people around here register their Ferraris and Lamborghinis in places like Florida and Montana all the time!

 

People have been registering home made campers in Maine for years since they allow out of state registrations.

 

Maine and Oklahoma seem to be the most popular states for registered the huge trailers that semis tow, at least based on license plates I've seen on the road...

 

I do everything I can to legally avoid things that inconvenience me, and I give my family and friends info on this as well...

Example: I work as a barback at a restaurant/music venue. Last year on St. Patrick's Day, my shift ended at like 11-11:30pm. Normally, my drive home from work at night takes 10-15 minutes at the most.

Unfortunately, I didn't bother to check online, and police had set up a DUI checkpoint blocking traffic in both directions, and they were stopping every single vehicle.

I'd also like to point out that I don't drive drunk and loathe people who do. As a barback whose shift had just ended, I was probably one of the only people driving home from a bar on St. Pat's who had any business behind the wheel! Translation: I was still a bit hopped up on the Monsters I'd chugged earlier to get through my shift, but I was completely sober!

So, basically, a relaxing 12-minute drive home turned into a 40-minute drive from hell! Yes, the cop let me go within two minutes after determining that I was in fact sober, but who wants to deal with that shit?!?!

Now, I use a website called DUI block to see if there are any DUI checkpoints in my area, so I know which routes NOT to take on my way home!

 

Guys be careful with trying to get around local registrations, check your state's laws. In Tennessee once you've moved here you have 30 days to register your vehicle in the state. If you're driving with out of state tags and it can be established you live here you can be cited for violation of registration law.

An old friend of mine was a DMV Sgt. here in Ct., His last gig before retirement was to track down out of state registrations from ct residents.
Mostly Vt, SC, and Maine plates.
Most were turned in by neighbors who complained.

 

A story about another loophole at work...

One time back in May 2006, when I was 17, I was still on my learner's permit and my dad was giving me driving lessons in his '96 Pathfinder. My dad was in the Navy from 1982 to 2007. As active-duty military, my dad was not required to register his vehicle in the state where he was living or have a driver's license in that state.

A common (and totally legal) practice for people on active duty is to declare residency in their home state to avoid state income taxes in the state where they are stationed, typically at their parents' house. My dad's parents lived in New Jersey, and from '82 to 2005, my dad held an NJ license with his parents' address on it. When we moved back to PA in '05, my dad's NJ license was about to expire, and my mom was required to transfer her Virginia license to PA, so he did too. We'd lived in Virginia from 2002-2005.

However, my dad kept the Pathfinder and my mom's almost-new minivan registered in Virginia since the registrations and inspections on both were good for another two years.
