I wonder if this would work for "street legal" motorcycles...

My cousin in CT (although he has New York license and residency I'm pretty sure...) has had an FL plated Nissan 240sx for like 10 years now. Had it registered at our grandparents condo in FL. He put a Japanese crate engine in it and we'll... NY frowns upon those things apparently.

    Sooo...

Going back to May 2006, my dad planned on giving me the Pathfinder since he had his '02 BMW 3-Series and my mom had an '04 Honda Odyssey. As such, he gave me driving lessons in the Pathy. On this particular Saturday, my dad took me to the parking lot of Doylestown Hospital, and let me drive around for like an hour. After an hour, I wanted to drive on the main road. My dad agreed, and we exited the hospital parking lot onto a main road. I stopped for a stop sign, turned on my leg T blinker, looked both ways, and made the left. It was at this moment that I noticed the marked Crown Vic behind me. Just when I beginning to think it's a coincidence and the cop is just on street patrol, his lights and siren come on. My dad and I are both absolutely dumbfounded about what I could have possibly done at that moment to get pulled over...

I pull over, and the cop walks up to my window and asks to see my license and registration. I smile and tell him I only have a learner's permit, but that my dad is teaching me how to drive and he has an actual driver's license.

Once he has my dad's license, my learner's permit, and the registration and insurance for the Pathfinder in his possession, he tells us why he pulled us over.

Dispatch had received a call from
hospital security about "two suspicious guys in a green SUV with Virginia plates circling the parking lot for a long time."

Obviously, the cop knew now that the "two suspicious guys" consisted of a father teaching his son now to drive...

Charlie, unless you pay ridiculous property tax on your ride, just go along with your state law.

BTW you shouldn't move to Virginia because of their property tax on cars. Plus all of the inspection/emissions requirements. Actually I'm all for inspections and emissions. I am totally against property tax on cars. We don't see a return on that payment.

It sounds like what you are dealing with can be worse elsewhere.

So, my dad's Pathfinder had a license plate frame that said "FLY NAVY NAVAL AVIATION" on the back. It also had numerous Navy stickers in the back window. If that wasn't enough, it also had a valid Department of Defense sticker in the windshield!

Even a rookie cop should have been able to quickly figure out that this Pathfinder belonged to someone in the United States Navy!

Neither of us had been happy about getting pulled over, but we had both been calm and civil the whole time.

The cop comes back with our papers and says we are free to go, but as he's handing them back, proceeds to lecture my dad about it is required to register your vehicle in Pennsylvania within a month of establishing residency. The veins in my dad's neck started to show, and I thought he was about to lose it with the cop.

He keeps his cool, but in a tone that made it obvious he was pissed off, he tells the cop he is in the Navy and not required to register his vehicle in the state. He then shows the cop his military ID as proof, the cop apologizes, and we leave.

Within a month of that incident, my dad registered the Pathfinder and the van in PA because he thought the Virginia plates attracted unwanted attention from police...

I never said I'd move to Virginia or register my truck there. One thing I honestly love about PA is that they are a one-plate state!

Jeesh, just pay your fair share just like all your neighbors. Don't like your local or state tax issues? Get involved and try to change things. How would you like it if everyone in PA found some loophole so that they wouldn't have to pay taxes for schools, or roads, or fire, or police, or the myriad other things that you benefit from either directly or indirectly? Or, just move your ass to Maine and enjoy the underfunded schools, the high unemployment, the rampant alcoholism and other issues that stem from a state with a historic preference for low taxes, a "love free or die" mentality, and minimal social services.

You're talking about breaking laws and cheating the system to save what, $100 a year? Meanwhile you're exposing yourself to SO MUCH potential headaches if you get in an accident, hurt someone, your insurance finds out and drops you, etc. And those annual inspections and drunk driving checkpoints that are so inconvenient to you are there to save lives. Thank the cops for risking THEIR lives for YOU, standing out there on dark roads at night.

Which is why I'd keep the Tacoma registered at my parents' house if I ever had to move there...

What I mean by One-Plate State is that PA only requires a rear license plate. No pointless second license plate cluttering up my front end!

I don't have a problem with school taxes, road taxes, and property taxes. Those benefit everybody...

My local school district (Central Bucks) is among the best in the country! I think those taxes are a very good thing...

As an occasional angler, I also agree wholeheartedly with fishing licenses because the fees keep the public lakes and rivers maintained...

I also somewhat agree with DUI laws, and I'm primarily annoyed at the inconvenience they cause...

Tell me how paying a mechanic $60 to inspect my truck and tell me what I already know (that it's in perfect condition) benefits me...

Tell me how not being to buy a 6-pack of my favorite beer at a gas station, or a bottle of wine at a Wal Mart, benefits me...

As both an employee at a bar and a beer enthusiast, I believe that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board sucks royal ass!

Getting back on topic, you guys all
make excellent points, and I knew deep down that I probably would not transfer registration of my Tacoma outside of Pennsylvania unless I actually move. I just wanted some different opinions...

People of TW, you are awesome!

I had to snowblow 12" on Christmas and 14" last week. It's been below 0 since Christmas. Trade island life for that and you too, can have slightly cheaper registration!

One guy I met only registered his hot-rodded '93 Chevy S-10 in Maine because it wouldn't pass emissions and was too new to qualify for antique tags...

Also, many other states do just fine without property taxes on vehicles! I'd have to about a grand annually to register my Tacoma in Connecticut if I lived there, based on its current value.

One member from Virginia commented on this thread that the tax on vehicles there doesn't help residents at all.
