My factory wiper blades are bad after 1 month :/

Mine started to split after a year. Went with some nice rain-x ones. Like them a lot.

 

Mine are 11 months old now and work as good as new. I've had good luck with the Rain X brand on other cars and will try them on my taco when it's time.

 

Replaced mine at 18 months with OEM Toyota refills. Think it was $8 for both.

 

I've seen a lot of people who pull the wiper arms away from the windshield so they don't freeze to the window..... leave them sticking out front.

I personally do not do that as my "common sense" tells me that I'm compressing the spring that applies pressure to the wiper blade when in contact with the windshield. I figure that the more you compress a spring, the sooner it will weaken the spring..! The wiper blade needs this pressure to perform.

A weakened spring now will NOT put the required pressure on the blade/windshield contact.... RESULT.... Poor performance, streaking, etc....

If new blades or inserts do not help, and you've been flipping them up off the window.... You may new new springs and change yer habits..!

This makes sense to ME... anyone else..?

 

2 years on originals, started to miss a little on the return for last 2 inches of drivers side. OEM inserts for 6 dollars each, good as new. Just like with my corolla, the OEM inserts seem to preform the best and are always cheap to replace. Tried Bosch Icons on my car and they were terrible after a few months.

Springs wear when cycled...
I've cycled mine about 100 times in 2.5 years; when I wash.
I never pull them away to prevent freezing.
If they were to freeze, I'd wait until defrosted to use them; nor would I use them on a iced windshield to clear ice off.
I'm 2.5 years on the OE blades.

 

Not talking about "cycling" the wiper arms....... Some peeps in the Great White North pull the wiper arms away from the window and leave them sticking out like that for days...till they use the car again... They come home and repeat....

That was what I am referring to..... I'm not sure they would do that in Arkansas....!!

 

Rain-X brand is good

 

Try cleaning the windshield with something like Bar Keepers Friend before dropping a wad on brand x blades.

A little time and a couple bucks. Worst thing that happens is you still need blades but you have the cleanest windshield you've ever had.

 

I'v had my factory ones on for 2 years and they are still like new.

 

Costco has a decent set for $10-$15, Goodyears...
Not a huge fan of the tires but the wipers are ok.

 

I am not sure the issue is the blade material. Mine freeze up and won’t conform when first starting out. It has to do with the blade freezing in its holder. I find the OEM blades very good with the exception of this freezing. I haven’t taken the time to silicone the sliding points or use some sort of lube. I am sure this will solve the issue. Come warmer weather they perform like new again.

 

It doesn't help your cause, or anyone else's, but I'm running the same factory blades on my 2016 purchased in June of 2016, I now have 29,000 miles and have no immediate plans to replace them. I just drove home in pouring rain not 10 minutes ago.

 

The ol’ take n’ swap scheme- found an old pair of tennis shoes in the supposedly new box of shoes I brought home from a store once :/

 

Well...I'm sure that happens. But I was referring to brand new defective ones out of the box

 

My factory blades are just starting to show some wear now at 14 mos.

 

Put in new refills....(just the rubber).... the dealer has them for less than $10 US..

 

over the years I found out that cleaning your wiper blades with alcohol will kill them quick, especially if the vehicle is in a dry environment most of the time (like a garage).

the alcohol breaks the oils in the rubber down and drys it out, resulting in gaps and streaks when using your wipers.
NEVER use alcohol to clean them unless you like buying new blades.

if the blades are super dirty get a soapy shop towel or rag and wipe the blades down, then wipe them down again with a clean rag thats wet with water.
been 1.5 years on my factory wiper blades cleaning with soapy water only.

 

My stock blades started streaking at around 14 months. Replaced with Icons and now they are starting to streak after 11 months. Not sure what is next. I do have Goodyears on my car and they are great.
