Fox 2.5s question

my dad just got some Fox 2.5 front coilovers for his 3rd gen, and is wondering how much lift out of the box it will give his truck. He’s looking to get 2” lift out of it. If someone could please advise.

 

You will get 2" no problem.

 

So you think it will be 2” based on the threads showing?

 

Yes. It loooks like you have about 2"of thread showing. On my truck I have about 2.25" showing and I have about 2" of lift. but I am running sliders, winch, bumper and a camper shell. So about 2"of thread showing and no armor you should be about 2 to 2 1/2 " in lift.

I installed a set a couple of weeks ago and out of the box it was right at 1” of lift. I turned them up last week and now have 2”.

Warning: it was a mother... I bought the fox Spanner, took them out and it still took a lot to get that much. Not sure the spring rate, but they are stiff. I had to use a big spring compressor, the little loaner ones from the parts store wouldn’t even touch them.

To get 2” you’ll need about 3” of thread showing.

 

I'm DCLB 4x4, no armor. I got 1" on factory setting. Which is the same as the pic you posted. Crank it up if you want 2".

 

Is the spanner wrench required to adjust them?

 

I had the same problem. even with the truck lifted and the preoload off the were a PITA. I sprayed the threads with lube, then hit the spanner wrench with a mallet. Ended up working but was a workout and a half.

 

The spanner will make it a heck of a lot easier to adjust but it can be done with other tools. Also the amount of lift will be determined on how much weight he has on the front of the truck.

 

A 5/16" pin punch will work and a can of wd40. The springs are 600# but are PITA to crank. I have the fox spanner wrench i'd sell to you since it doesn't work with remote resi's.

 

If it helps I installed these last night, I was at 21 inch from center axle to fender, now about 23 1/8 . I am running 24 exposed threads on drivers and 21 on passenger.

Oh and I had no issues adjusting on truck with wd40 and a cut off #3 philips screw driver(equivalent to 5/16 punch)

Lesson learned on one coil over I installed then realized that the set screw was facing in ward, so I couldn’t loosen to adjust. Something to check before you install, so I had to tear it all out again to loosen the set screw so I could then Later adjust on the vehicle.

 

I bent 2 punches and a hardened drill bit trying to get them to move.

Maybe it was just bad luck. but with no weight on the suspension, pb blaster, and a lot of cursing they still wouldn’t move.

2nd double checking the set screw location. Mine were both on the backside. To me it didn’t matter though, I knew I was going to have to remove them to adjust.

 

That’s a lot of work just to adjust them a little. It would be nice if Fox would mark the threads to show different ride heights. I’m worried we will be in the situation you described where we install them just to see where it sits and have to take them off to adjust them.

 

What year, model and how much extra weight if any do you have?

 

Thanks this is some good info, I believe there are around 24 threads showing. So hopefully it will be around 2” lift like yours turned out.

 

2017 trd off road no armor

 

Are those new or used? They definitely looked cranked up for 2"+ of lift but thats unusual. Normally they come with only a couple threads showing and that gets you 1" or less.

 

This is exactly what mine looked like when I got them brand new. They are set for a little bit of lift when FOX assembles them but not a lot. The reason is I think that they aren't supposed to give a lot of life. It's about ride quality and out of the box the ride height is about in the middle of the travel window, e.g. about the same up and down travel.



I swapped to 650 lb/in coils and my collar location is about the same. I have roughly 2" of lift now. This with an ARB bumper, front skid, winch. I also have a 2nd gen truck, so my factory ride height started lowed.

That's how you adjust them, take the load off the springs and loosen the set screw then turn the collar. But don't back the set screw completely out, you'll risk the collar slipping, cross threading or stripping threads. Ideally you should compress the spring to completely remove the load but lots of people get away with doing it on the truck with the wheels hanging in the air.
