This story is why i'm glad i went with a 2013 over the 3rd gen. i found the same problems the OP did when i only test drive the 3rd gens, i cant deal with that 3.5 and a slow transmission would drive me nuts. i love the 4.0 with the 5-speed it gets up and goes just fine, my previous tacoma was an '08 reg cab 2.7 manual. so i am on my second 2nd gen tacoma no regrets. trading in vehicles every few years/months is expensive but you learn a lot in the process, i have done it too lol ;)

    4.0 with a 5 speed? I thought only the 2.7's had the 5 speed and all V6's were 6 speed RA60?

    Ah right.

I've always driven MT's and think of autos as a "single" forward gear, just D drive, but you're probably right.

Lol same. I was talking to a guy (he had an auto 2 gen Tacoma)telling him I was potentially buying a 6 speed FJ, he was like “man I wish my tacoma had 6 speeds, my old 4Runner was a 6 speed!” It wasn’t. I didn’t bother correcting him tho. That’s actually what made me realize that might be what nightrambler meant.
