Rear diff is getting replaced.

This is another great way to blow diffs on the trail, last summer I know of at least 2 guys that it happened to. Wheel spin + sudden traction is incredibly hard on the diff, good way to make it go 'boom'. Avoid spinning tires when you're stuck

Yes, I know the Tacoma doesn’t have a rear dif cover, hence the screen shot of the brand x differential showing the internals from the back side. I should have just searched “Tacoma Rear Dif” on You Tube.

I filled my rear dif with fluid at the back side and checked torque on nuts prior to dropping my rear axle for a slight lift.
Yes, the front of the unit is removed. Yes, they have to disassemble and use new o rings and gaskets, after pulling driveshafts.
Something I did many years ago on an old 1966 vehicle!

He ran a 14.6 in the quarter with a stock PreRunner. Cost him a few Benjamins but he's still proud of it.

You can still do your donuts in the dirt but what others are saying is that when more common in the rocks like rock crawling m. My buddy launched the rear end up in althe air with e locker on and when it came down it was a bunch of clicks. Surprised the u joint didn’t give first but in the dirt you will be fine.

 

Okay so just take it easy when crawling or take the easy way around.

 

Got the truck back today and they said the bearings were damaged but couldn't tell me what caused it.

Going to have to take it wheeling again and see if everything works and if that noise comes back afterwards.

My father says these new tacomas are trash if the diff can't handle a little rocky fire road. He's a 1st gen manual trans owner so naturally he thinks he's got the greatest pickup made by men which he does have a good argument for at neary 300k miles.

 

Bypass is for the jeepers, take it easy let the tires spin slowly and let the lugs do their job and grab ahold to get you over. You will learn to figure out good lines. Sometimes they may appear to be the worst but they will give you traction and not lift a tire off the ground. These trucks are capable in stock form so don’t let anyone lead you to believe a little spinning in dirt will ruin the rearend or wheeling will do the same. Have fun with the truck and learn it’s limits. Others stated wheel hop, and while on the street you can get it and it can be bad. The dirt is different, these aren’t powerhouses by any means so you won’t get much hop there unless your in the rocks. Enjoy the truck you will be fine, it was meant to have fun in.

 

Is the rear diff just a two plug fill/overflow?

Ahh right, I wanna check mine. Of course I'll read the Bible, but just fill to slight overflow then seal 'er up eh?

 

I don’t over fill it because it can cause it to puke out the vent. I pour it just Below the fill plug 1/4 to 3/8 and check with my pinky.

Lucas 85-140 but that’s what ECGS recommends
