Cruise Control Issues

I recently had some much needed work don to my 08 Taco. Had the Clutch and throw out bearing replaced as well as a new hub bearing pressed. I figured out while changing the axel seals that the bad bearing missing the ABS ring was causing the ABS and Brake light to be on as well as the cruise being out. After it got replaced I figured the cruise would be restored... Nope! I got the cruise to illuminate once at a red light just messing around with it but the speed wouldn't set. Now it wont even turn on. Looking for some help on where to start to diagnose the Cruise control. Anything would be appreciated Thanks!!

 

I believe theres a fuse, check that first. If not the problem might be in the steering part of the switch as it should turn on the CC light. If its a standard then check the clutch play and theres a micro switch that needs to be engaged for CC to set. Then in the engine bay check to see that all the cables are hooked up to the CC apparatus.

 

also if the clutch sags a little the clutch switch for the CC can be adjusted.

 

Were you able to get it fixed? My cc went out a few months ago and I have still yet to figure it out. My boyfriend checked the fuses and they seem to be fine, got a new switch still nothing, changed the spiral cable (which was fixed like in 08 a lil while after I got it then ended up being a recall later so I got my money back) and now the airbag light is on. It's driving me nuts!!! I need my cruise control cuz I tend to have a lead foot so it keeps me out of trouble. Any thoughts?

 

There should be a little rubber pad on one of the arms that keeps the "clutch up" switch depressed, make sure it's still there and hasn't deteriorated, if it has then the clutch switch will go through the hole left by the missing pad an it will not allow CC to come on.

 

I'll double check that when I get home but I think it's still there, when it first started having issues it was like in and out a couple times then nothing, no more cruise.


For the airbag light my bf says it just needs to be reset since he replaced the spiral cable but that still doesn't fix my cruise control.

 

The CC and airbag share the same spiral cable. Since you have a warning light and no CC my money is on a bad spiral cable......again. Second in line is the stalk itself on the steering wheel.

 

But the airbag light wasn't on before we switched the spiral cable out, I only had no CC. Once we switched it the light came on and we only switched it to rule that out since nothing else we tried worked

 

Not a photo persay but here's a schematic, in blue is the cruise control switch, in red is the tab and plastic button/pad that hits the cruise control pressure "dead-man" switch, and in green is the hole the cc switch is mounted through.

You can see sticking out from the side of the pedal is the arm the plastic button is installed through. It just pops in place.

If the button is still there but worn you may need to adjust the cc switch height.

 

When you replaced the spiral cable, did you disconnect the battery first?

My vote is the cable as well since your cc light is not even on. The cc switch on the steering wheel is pretty simple, if signal from the steering wheel can’t get to the computer then the light won’t come on. IMO, forget about the clutch switch and focus on the steering wheel and getting that cc light to come on.

I installed cc on my 5sp 4cyl last year, and I know from experience that the cc light will come on if the steering wheel switch is properly installed and talking to the computer. even WITHOUT the clutch switch being installed.

^^^ This. I'm thinking that the air bag light would not necessarily illuminate because the spiral cable is bad. I may be wrong...

 

RachelJ, does you air bag light on the dash come on for a couple of seconds when the key is off and then turned to the on (not start) position?

 

Did you ever get it figured out?
