Toyota has never been the innovation leader, more like a tortoise, slow and steady. It’s going to be awhile before there are major changes to the Tacoma. The tundra should get some updates sooner rather than later as it’s a bit dated.

Pretty sure anyone who actually knows anything is not going to tell you, but, because I'm a nice guy, will tell you your answer:

When Toyota feels that offering another engine option makes a good business case, they will offer it.

There's your answer. Tacomas are printing money now. Everyone said "well when the new Colorado comes out they will beat the Tacoma." Didn't happen. Now they are saying the same about the Ranger. We will see but probably won't happen either. When it makes sense to Toyota that something different is needed to keep making money, they will offer it. Not until.

I’ll take my naturally aspirated gas jobber any day. Diesel is not an upgrade until I’m carting a trailer of goats in a foreign country.

Only updates Toyota will make is the price. Why spend more $ to change stuff when people keep buying what you have at higher and higher prices?

I always see people referencing diesels and towing, pretty sure they didn’t put a diesel and a cobalt so it can tow a semi trailer :boink: The reason Id be interested in one is because it would improve from my average of 13 mpg combined. I drive it to work some and at 72 mph with the cruise set some mornings I get 12 or just under.

    Here goes! :crapstorm:

Seriously though, I think that Toyota draws you in with their reliability reputation and makes you forget about how far parts of the truck are behind the competition. Also, they're building vehicles that are largely tailored to the average consumer, who unlike many TW users will never touch dirt or haul almost anything.

Diesel doesn’t seem practical for a midsize truck. Maybe for the tundra. Considering a lot of Tacoma owners wheel their rigs diesel wouldn’t make sense either, too heavy to take out in hairy situations. As stated, when Toyota sees necessary they will offer. But also, when the U.S. market allows it. They already have hydrogen cars and what not abroad, but it doesn’t make sense to launch it here because then someone starts loosing $$$. Diesel Tacoma’s could fall in the same boat too.

Too heavy? The difference between the 3.5 and the duramax 4 banger it about 200 lbs, or the equivalent of an extra buddy in the truck, but you gain around 100 ft lbs of torque at around 2k rpm...so in other words it’s great for wheeling

When my truck came out it was marketed as being the most powerful truck in its class. This was with an engine that was almost a whole liter smaller than the competition (3.4 vs chevys 4.3)

This lead didn’t last for a very long time, but it still happened and the engine remained close in output to the competition for a while. So it’s not like Toyota can’t come out with something with impressive performance.

Please don't make this into another diesel thread. That ruins everything!...

do we even know the rangers power stats? I would like more torque yes, but i still cannot trust a ford or gm for reliability.

I see Toyota going down the route honda atv's did. They sold units on the reliability bandwagon, but others have caught up to them and offer more power, more features, more comfort etc. Honda no longer leads the atv sales

I dont look at a diesel as an upgrade.
I would never buy a diesel because I have no need for it.
The chevy colorado diesel is 9.7 secs 0-60. It has been described by motortrend as borderline acceptable. i.e. close to a dump truck imo.
I would rather have more hp and a better time than the greater torque.
