Ahhh. That makes a bit more sense then. I have steel line and it came on the drum, which is why I was so confused on how you got it backwards.

You did do great today. Picked very solid lines most of the time. Other than the wind making it cold as fuck, it was a great day.

I appreciate the kind words but I am no where near the best. I just get out there and try things.

Holey crap! Sucks it broke your rope, but lucky you that you didn't rip out you winch from the mount, or bend it!
Like 2-3 days ago I watched a program explaining that situation (but with steel cable).

Unless someone here will help you with splicing, there are some youtube videos showing how to do that. Good luck!

I watched a few videos last night. There's a couple ways I can go about it, either and end to end splice and keep roughly the same length of rope, or I can put the hook on the part that got cut off and lose about 25 feet of rope. The end to end splice is slightly more involved than just throwing the hook on the end.

Either way I do it, it's not difficult but i want to do it when its not below freezing in Philly! I think I'll have some days this week that hit almost 40*.

Actually, I need to spool the rope the right way on the drum anyway. I'll have to take all the rope off anyway and can splice in the comfort of my home lol

Not sure if you did this the first time or not, but once it's fixed and you're respooling it, make sure to do it under a light load. I just pull someones truck up a slight incline with them in N.

@Redmann make sure your line didn't get frayed from the first time when you spooled it. Might of been rubbing on your bumper. Just look it over when you repair it.

Did you figure out what's going on with the truck?

Not yet. I ended up using the weekend to get a lot of house stuff done and now I’m booked up the next few weekends. Maybe one night during the week.

Remember that spot in the line that we noted looked like it was uncoated when we were winding it up? If it broke around there I would definitely say it's the ropes fault.

Might be safer not to splice and use the extra line as a 20-25 ft extension. Plus you're going to have more pulling power without unspooling as much line.

Just a thought I'm no expert.

I was wondering that too. I don't think it broke where it was uncoated. I Can't really remember, but I thought it was closer to the end of the rope (meaning the side I attached to the drum) but I will definitely be looking over the whole rope again though.

I mean the butt splice I was watching some guy do went about 2 feet into each end of the broken rope and is stitched to prevent any movement. The characteristics of a synthetic winch rope is that it tightens as it gets pulled taught. I wouldn't think that it loses much strength, but just like @steele-taco said, I am no expert. to be honest, the eye loop at the end of the rope is done in the same manner in terms of the threading the rope through itself, but not as far and only with the rope going in on itself one time.

Here's the video I watched. I have watched others. some say 23", some say 28".
