They're not going to fuck with the F150 customer base, that's their bread and butter. You either buy the Ranger or smarten up and buy the F series with a V6, V8 or diesel, no cross shopping / wishing to confuse you by making them overlap.

well this is the first year so they might gauge consumer demand and add to it? Who knows, they dont want to cannibalize the F150 though.

And for Toyota content, this is a direct competitor to the 3rd gen so hopefully they wont lock it...*fingers crossed*

    Can't cannibalize them F150 sales!!

Apparently the 2.3 has seriously bad head warping issues, bad enough that the deck and head both warp hard enough that some people have hydrolocked with coolant!

However my understanding of the 10-speed is that you'll actually get less gear hunting. Hunting happens when you have gaps in your ratios, more ratios = more likely that there will be a suitable pulling gear (or overdrive) ratio for your given load.

Looks like the tacoma is still going to be the sales leader in midsize then. I'd be surprised if the ranger ever sells more.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the ranger raptor here at some point.

I saw one in person a few weeks ago on the highway in LA. I was driving next to it for about 15 min. I was a long time Ford guy and had a Ranger for a long time. The new version looks horrible in person. Looks more like a Honda Ridgeline than a real truck. Wish I had gotten a picture but didn’t think about it at the time. Just couldn’t get over how ugly it was.

I'm excited to see what the next few years brings. I will be keeping my eye on the ranger and frontier as they start rolling out.

As someone else mentioned, the price will be key here. If they can come in $5k less than any Tacoma (like the original rangers did) then they will sell like hotcakes.

Actually think that is good thing. Because Chevy and Toyota gives us a watered down version of their global trucks. Seeing it has a fully boxed frame, maybe Ford will give us decent payload???

If it is exactly the same as the global ranger...aftermarket should be ready to go, at least from ARB.

Liking the straight across bumper...means no cutting of plastic bullshit to mount a winch bumper.

Yeah, everything looks similar now-a-days, though I am liking it...not as over the top as the Tacoma...little cleaner and not so in your face like the Tacoma. Have been trying hard to like the 3rd gen looks wise...just can't seem to.

I worked with an engineer who was on the Ford transmission team when they were developing it, she thought it was a very prommissing trans.

No mention of aluminum body. That's disappointing if it's not

Aluminum hood and tailgate, steel for the rest of the body, from what I have heard.

I think it is all going to depend on where the ranger is priced, if it is priced a lot better than the Tacoma, Toyota will have some issues. Some have mentioned payload and towing, as an owner of many 1500 and 2500 size trucks, I actually think the Tacoma has decent payload and towing for its size. I am still warming up to the Tacoma, (my first) we shall see if the reliability reputation and retail stand up to the hype. Build quality so far is Meh...I have a lot more little build quality issues with this than I have had with the domestics. But I bought it for resale since the two choices on best resale are the Tacoma and Wrangler. I needed a truck bed and I have had too many Jeeps to deal with their issues right now.

I think Ford will sell a bunch of these, probably more than Toyota the first year or two, once the new wears off and the Ford issues start to pop up, the sales will reverse again.

    Yep

Not sure why people get worried about pulling sales from the F-150. If anything it will pulls sales from Toyota and Chevy, which would be a win-win for Ford.

Curious what Nissan'll do once it's their turn with the next gen frontier

Will they be smart and offer a manual turbo diesel or no

For the record most of the 2.0/2.3L Ecoboost engine issues where related to the exhaust head in the first generation of these engines. Ford redesign both in 2014/2015/2016 depending on the vehicle make. Apart from that the failure rate is low.

Most of the issues I've heard people complain about the Ecoboost are from the 1st gen 3.5 L Ecoboost. It was pretty common for people to run extended oil changes in that truck and suffer the fate of an oil/water cooled turbo that's being under lubed. In my former career I did some operations management. All of our trucks used synthetic, we never had an Ecoboost fail before 300k. Actually, not true, we had one failure but that was because a girl used an oil filter that looked like a hockey puck (almost no volume) because her hubby said it was better for the engine than the OEM filter. Luckily Ford stepped up and replaced the engine under warranty still with the warning that we only use Ford OEM filters from that point on.

It looks a bit like a Colorado. I was skeptical of the 10 speed transmission, but the talk I've heard from people who have the F150's with it suggest it's actually pretty good. I'm more interested in how the turbo charged 4 cylinder will perform.

Nope. Aluminum hood and tailgate, steel body otherwise. Fully boxed high strength steel frame as well.

Ive spent countless hours under a 98 ranger trying to fix fluid leaks. Made some headway but it has ruined me on the idea of owning another one. Unless they wow me with the raptor.. but so far the design and lack of manual trans puts it far below my expectation. Good thing, saves me money. Helps that I am perfectly happy with my '17 TRDOR.
