The 2019 diesel Tacoma will surely be better than this

Not sure, but the mid sized truck segment is a pretty small sandbox.

As others have mentioned, Ford does not want to cannibalize the F series market. They want to go head to head with Tacoma, the leader in mid size.

Sales price is an area that has been ignored imo. These trucks are rather expensive these days. Would be good to see something nice in the under $30k price range.

So you two are arguing whether an engine with an unknown tune in a new application and a new transmission will be reliable?

That is the definition of speculation.

Then why not just make it an F100 Ranger, and go all out on it? Then it won't cannibalize the F series sales, but add to it.

Not sure why everyone is flipping out about the 1 engine option. For 95% of people the Tacoma really only has 1 engine option.

I don't think that the nomenclature is what they are concerned with.

For me, it's largely because it's not the well known 2.7 or 3.5 ecoboost.

True, but those were both huge unknowns when they were introduced. As well as every other eco boost. They have done enough of them successfully at this point that I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't be in the test group on them.

Honestly, if the back seats are bigger and I could get an XL/CC/RR Diff lock, I will look hard at one.

I had an F150 with the smaller 2.7L. Having had V8’s before that, it was amazing how much torque there was down low. If the 2.3 is anything like that engine, it will blow away my little Toyota 3.5. And the 4.0. And I honestly got 23-24MPG on the freeway, going 70. I had a long commute for a while and fully stock, staying out of turbo, it was getting impressive mileage out of a full-size truck. If 2.3 can squeeze out a couple more MPG.....it’ll take a good sized dent out of Taco sales. Especially as gas prices start going up.

And for what it’s worth, Ford 6-sp was excellent and the auto S/S worked flawless for me. I actually liked it quite a bit.

Oh, and it probably comes with rear discs!

People often talk about other trucks denting the Tacoma's sales, but it never happens. When the Colorado, Canyon and Ridgeline came out, the Tacoma's sales increased. It seems the midsize trucks may not draw much from the same consumer pool, but rather sell to a brand's fanbase. My guess is the Ranger will be similar, and mostly sell to Ford fans. At least that's my guess. I could be wrong.

Pretty much, while the 2.7 will get the job done, not too too terribly excited about it. Was looking at the SR ACLB 4 banger manny since it was a half-way decent price point and get a manny trans...and since that is gone for '18. What is the point, ya know? Might as pony up a couple extra grand and get the V6.

Long time Toyota fan here going on 26 years...tell ya the Ranger has peaked my interest. Even if it doesn't come with a manny trans...which is a lot coming from me.

When they ended production in 2011 for NA, they had over 70k in Sales. Still below Tacoma (111k), but that’s a Huge chunk of the market.

And let’s not forget, until the 2nd gen Taco came out, the Ranger sales were killing Tacoma’s.

Well of course there are crossover sales from fans of other brands, but new midsize trucks keep getting added, and the Tacomas's sales don't take a hit.

That's not my point - I'm not saying the Ranger won't sell well. I'm saying I don't see it having any effect on the Tacoma's sales.

If they do this thing halfway right, and Toyota keeps putting out these trucks with all these "malfunctions", I will have to disagree.

I think this burying the head in the sand attitude has bitten a lot of companies. I’m not a fortune teller and don’t know what will happen. But I will say Ford has a HUGE brand loyal fan base (especially trucks), and saying the new Ranger, which will most likely make more HP, possibly more MPG, and personally, I think looks great—will have No effect on Tacoma sales? As a businessman, highly doubtful.

At least not yet. Haven't been too impressed with the direction Toyota has been going with the Tacoma. Payload keeps on shrinking, no real improvement with mpg over the years, build quality seems to be slipping. Styling is so-so.

That is a good thing! Don't care for the codpiece grills that have been trendy these last few years.

Every time I see a 3rd gen all I see is Cameo. Word up!

I await the day Toyota decides to bring back the Hilux to this market and give us a proper work truck. Ones with a decent payload and no frills option, selectable gearing, and a rear locker. Almost there with the SR.

I owned a first gen 4wd Ranger, an ‘86 which was first year of the SuperCab, 2.9V6 with 4 speed auto and fuel injection. A good truck, but was already feeling a bit worn after 80K miles. On paper the new looks great to me however, and if it had been here two years ago I would have definitely tested it. By the way, I was in Mexico a few months ago and saw 10-20x more Tacoma’s than the current Ranger, which is sold there. Or Hilux ... we think those are cool, but Mexicans aren’t buying them. They buy Tacoma’s.
