Cracked my windshield...

So....was replacing the wiper blades on my pickup....accidentally knocked the wiper arm down onto the windshield with no blade on it....bullesyes on the windshield.

I imagine it did not help that it's so dang cold outside.

I really don't like having to work on cars in the cold....at least I should be able to repair it with a resin kit and it's not in my normal line of sight.

 

If you have comprehensive insurance that should pay for your windshield or the repair

 

The 15 dollar repair kit is cheaper than my deductible

 

You mean chipped it? A crack cannot be resin repaired.

 

A star, bullseye, chip...whatever you want to call it. I've repaired similar type damage before on windshields with no adverse affects.

 

I’ve had a bullseye on my windshield for as long as I can remember. I haven’t done anything with it. I figured if it got bigger I’d get the windshield replaced. It’s on the passenger side and hasn’t changed.

 

Sad to say your repair won’t last long once it warms up. Plan on replacing your windshield in a few months. Next time when changing the wipers, put a towel or piece of cardboard down where the arm would rest. Ive done that since a few years ago I had the same thing happen to me, thankfully mine didn’t crack the windshield but it scared the shit out of me when it smacked the windshield.

 

Why would you say it won't last long? As long as I do the repair properly with a hea t gun and ensure the glass and resin are clean I would think I wouldn't habe any issues....i never have before when I have done them.


Is not original factory glass if there is something special about it....i one got a crack in the original to big to repair so it is an aftermarket windshield.

 

Location of the crack plays a huge factor. In your case at the very bottom of the windshield.

 

I used the autozone repair kit on a windshield with a rock chip about 4-5” up from the base dead center. That was around five years ago now and it hasn’t spread.

 

Damn! You just invoked terror! Got a stone chip/crack their last week. Just checked & it doesn't quite match up. Looks like it's a crack anyhow.

 

Did the same thing when I lived in Alaska. USAA used Safelite and they repaired it for free. Lasted for a year+ before I got some chips and cracks in other sections of the windshield.

 

Tip: Lay a folded towel on the windshield where the wiper arm would hit if it gets away from you.

 

I've gone through this 4 times in 10 years on the Tacoma, and several times on other vehicles. I just repaired another chip a couple of months ago and so far it is holding. Repaired chips at the bottom of the windshield, may or may not last. The failure comes on a cold morning when you run the defroster. The rapid expansion of the glass under heat is what does it in. A tiny crack will start, and then off it goes. I have literally seen a crack run all the way across my windshield in a little over 60 seconds. Other times it will move a foot at a time. Chips higher up on the windshield seem to last longer. On average, I need a new windshield every 2 years. Usually it is due to rocks thrown during the winter when the roads are graveled.

 

Most insurance companies will NOT charge you any deductible if you have your windshield repaired. Some states have no deductible on glass damage (windshield)

I don't understand how the pregnant part happened. I am glad you didn't get pregnant from your truck.
