Yeah I think it’s sitting too high for me. Want it down below the cab to save some mpgs and make it easier to deal with. The shape does nothing but become a parachute once I start driving. If I had a low profile tent like you have then I’d like the taller rack to give me more access to the bed.

Allpro bed bars will keep the tent below the roofline of the cab. I use those and still put kayaks on the roof rack all summer without problems.

Yeah bed bars are what I’m looking at. Then once I build my roof rack I’ll have a place to carry my kayaks and mount an awning.

It works well enough that I can just push the kayak(s) forward out of the way of the tent and save some extra work.

Now which awning do you have?

It’s a TJM 2100x2000, works perfectly with the ARB awning for the same size awning.

It doesn’t affect the tent being on the same side?

Nope. Has about an inch between the awning and tent when they’re both open.

Edit: probably more than an inch looking back at this picture.

Is your awning 6ft or 8ft wide?

I've been flip flopping with my setup. Got a cap, didn't like it, sold it. Got bed bars & mounted the tent to that, but couldn't see anything. Got a different cap, I can see better, but don't like the extra weight higher up. So I'm now starting a displaced RTT setup. Bought an old military 'trailer', will mount my spare Tacoma bed to it, put the cap on that bed & the RTT on top of the cap, so a RTT Tacoma trailer. Should give me better vision & the ability to leave the campsite set up while being able to go wheeling in the truck.
[edit - discovered the trailer is running 6 lug 16" rims, same as the truck, hope the Tacoma wheels fit. Also, the leaf springs - 5 leaves per side!]

Can’t recommend BajaRack enough. I’ve had their utility racks on my previous FJ and now my current Taco.

Both my bed top system & the cross bars on my cap are from Yakima. The Yakima bars are round, I'd have preferred Thule bars which are square for a more solid connection, but Thule doesn't seem to know RTT's exist. Some folks have used a pipe stay/strap around the Yakima bars & put the bolts through that stay/strap.
Lots of styles & sizes out there: http://www.taylorassociates.com/Pipe_Stays_&_Straps.html

I got my hard shell RTT mounted this weekend. I've gone from the old-school flip-out RTT which was comfy but I dreaded setting that thing up and putting it away, to a huge canvas ground tent which was heavy AF, to this hard shell RTT. And I still have a 3-season tent and hammock if needed.

Nice! I remember your issues with the clamshell ones and when you made the decision to get rid of it. I’m glad to see you found something that seems like it’ll work out for you now!

Yeah, maybe it's just me, but that clamshell tent would take me like 20 minutes to setup. It was like doing acrobatics around my truck. I read that it takes some people 5 minutes. But that was never my experience. Another downside of that clamshell was the fact that the rainfly just happened to align perfectly with the ladder. So when it was raining, and you had to use the ladder, you were gonna get wet. Or even just morning dew... any movement on the ladder would shake that moisture right off the rain fly and onto whoever was on the ladder.
