Efficient use of lolly columns. Cabin we have for weekend doesn't have beds. The boys have theirs all set up too

Just a bunch of old crap
I just use my smartphone. It's either in my pants pocket, in my pack waist pocket, or sometimes I attach a small DCF bag to my shoulder strap. I do not envy anyone that carries a full DSLR when backpacking. Today's phones take great pictures and videos in 4K and that's enough for me.

I use a device called a capture clip. Actually, I use a cheap copy of the capture clip. I’ve used it the past two years while hiking the Grand Canyon. My camera’s a Nikon P530, smaller than a DSLR, but larger than a point and shoot. It works really well for me.

I have the Capture Clip Pro, but I have only used it on dayhikes.

I always take the DSLR on dayhikes, but I’m still kind of undecided on if I want to start bringing it on overnight type trips.

My BPW is down to 12-13lbs, so I’d have to add back like 3 lbs to take my 5DIV and 15-35 or 24-105. I’d love to have a Sony or Fuji mirrorless setup, but I don’t want to switch from Canon or buy a second system haha.

A few years ago while kayaking the Kickapoo river a friend was giving me crap for bringing my phone along in a water proof case. Then we came around a bend and I was able to get shots of a Bald Eagle in a tree about 10 feet over our heads:thumbsup:

I know this has been covered since I've read it before... But I'm sure it was 178 pages ago or so.

I'm doing more hiking, usually by myself. Knocked out my first 14er today on a whim.

I have a good idea of what survival/first aid stuff i need but I'm sure I'm short by a bit.

This is my list so far

    Screenshot_2018-01-14-17-14-15.jpg Screenshot_2018-01-14-17-14-22.jpg

And, I'd like to get a PLB/GPS. Not a fan of monthly subscriptions but i know it might be something I'll have to suck it up and do. Not overly worried about being able to text, mainly just something for the "oh fuck I fell off a cliff and won't make it out" situations.

Make sure to let someone know where you are going and when you are expected back. And have fun.

The Garmin inreach is what youd want if you dont want monthly subscriptions.

Only pay for the month that you're gone for.

Works as a normal GPS with no texting/inreach capabilities on all the other months.

Theres a guy on t4r selling the one he got in the group buy

I use the Spot when I'm on my own so my wife can see where I'm at. I think the Garmin-in reach is good, would be nice to be able to communicate instead of sending pre determined messages sometimes.

Yup, someone always knows my plans and time I should be back.

Tell him to come over here, I'm not going over there. :D

    What about this one?

Not sure about that beacon, it might work great, but I'd personally stick with either Garmin or Spot. I've had my Spot for 4 years.
On trips I set up the tracking so my Dad (80 years old) can follow along, he likes checking out the maps/areas

Garmin never popped up in my search, guess I was searching for the wrong terms. I'll check them out.

Edit, looks like the explorer+ is the way to go for the extra gps features.

I'm not 80 but not too far from it; I take my inReach so my son can follow along :D. Mostly he's jealous.

Damn, Garmin hits you with a nice price tag then the kidney punch with the subscription for texting and tracking.

What plan do you guys use?

$25/month Used most anytime I'm out. Worth it to save on the arguments.
