I’m going to get my fishing license today, and the boys “license” as well. He doesn’t need one, but I get him a permit for the mentored youth day and call it his license.

supposed to be today, the UPS truck usually gets here around noon and ill be out helping a friend:goingcrazy: around that time so I'll have to wait till I get back home...;) not quite ready (gear wise) to go fishing, and the lake is still frozen. I am ready to get out on the water once the lake clears of ice though! :D

The same shit everyone else has.
Ive still got a few more weeks of muzzleloader to go here but it's been to shitty/cold to even bother trying to hunt.

Hopefully the weather cooperates soon for one of us. Shits still frozen here so it's too cold to fish as well as hunt

Its warming here, definitely not as harsh a winter as last winter. Still not too excited till the lower lake thaws completely;) Still too cold to go out on open boat IMO.

You need to be fishing the Arkansas starting in March for BWO hatch and then April for the caddis hatch. The caddis hatch on the Ark is called the "Mothers Day Caddis Hatch" but it should really be called the "Tax Day Caddis Hatch"
Our boat is a 13' DRE raft and frame.

    Reserected from the dead.
Do you mean mend the line?

I might mend the line 1/3 of the time. I try to fish every square foot of the section im standing in.

I don't have a lot of patience, so I'm Lucky to stand in one spot for 15 minutes.

    Nice rig!

Where are you putting in/taking out on the Arkansas? I thought the Ark was more for whitewater trips, but is that just after the run off?

well I was watching a tv show and the guy fly fishing, looked like he was just getting the line out and barely setting the fly on the water then drawing back and setting it on the water again. Others Ive seen get the line out and once they get it to the distance/location they want, they let the line hit the water and let the fly set on the water or float down stream. If that makes any better sense?

You and I need to talk. I mostly float Salida East to Rincon or Stone Bridge to Salida. Like I said in my other post, I will start floating it in March and April, maybe sneak in a early May before runoff. Back at it in July when the water is down to 1.5k CFS or so. The March\April float can be pretty technical if the flows are below 350 CFS.

PM me if you want to chat more offline.

Fly casting looks pretty and all, but you’re not fishing if you’re casting... If your fly isn’t in the water, it’s hard to catch fish!

You definitely want to make a cast and let it drift, either upstream or downstream, before re-casting... Minimize the amount of time that the fly isn’t on the water.

Ahhh...got it. Not getting why one would only let the fly touch down and then continually repeat that. :notsure:

If you flies not on the water - you ain't catching fish. All you're doing then is simply casting. In moving water I let my fly run the entire drift I had planned (and even then sometimes more as on the swing when the fly twitches some....that when a fish will strike). On ponds I cast out and let it site for anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes - twitching it here and there. Depends what the fish are doing.

On the show where the guy is letting the fly hit the water and start stripping back immediately... My guess is he's fishing a streamer.

There are certain conditions when you'll strip back a dry fly on the surface, but those aren't the norm, so if the show pereon was doing that he/she would have mentioned it.

Also - not knowing the context of the tv show - the guy could have been casting a dry fly repeatedly to a feeding fish, trying to put the fly in the exact spot the fish was feeding in.

Not sure, maybe it was just for "show"...as is typical with a lot of the TV shows they just show a guy in the river and next they show him with a fish on...;) I know some is a time crunch but I'd like to see a technique or tips when watching shows also;)
