From what I understand, catch cans didn't seem to help Audi's carbon build up issue on their DI motors. You just have to run them a little hard every once in a while for it to become hot enough to burn off the carbon. People who were grannying their motors had the build up.

    Self induced boost leak. Interesting.

Since many taco owners like to reeve up the engine to compensate with the lack of power, DI takes over.

Running them hard keeps the valve seating surface clean enough to not have a misfire but doesn’t help the back side of the valve or intake runners. For what it’s worth I owned an 08 Mazdaspeed 3 up to 80k with no issues and no catch can. According to those forums, not running an catch can meant imminent problems at 30k so I think a lot is hype.

That’s the honest to god fix on those. .050” hole to drain condensate.... the boost leak in imperceptible because the hole is so small

Not so fast... A number of manufacturers have used some kind of PCV oil separator on DI engines including VW/Audi, Subaru, and GM. I'm sure they're used in other applications but I can only list these because I've seen them in person. There's also a Mopar part though I don't know if it was ever a factory option.

The Subaru and VW/Audi designs are in a closed loop so there's no maintenance interval. The GM version I saw was a kit included with the Camaro 1LE. The instructions say it's for off-road use only, which is most likely an emissions thing.

Alright, show me any 2017 normally aspirated vehicle of any type with a catch can. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not a bad idea since my Indian gas station owner cuts the gas 3/1 with water to make more $$$. What about a gas/ethanol separator?

I completely forgot...Nissan used them on most if not all SR20DET applications back when those engines were around. It was also in a closed loop like the Subaru and VW setups.

Not old. 2017 models. Which modern normally aspirated vehicle do engineers use an OEM catch can? I don't think any but I might be wrong is what I meant.

NA and 2017? I have no idea. Probably not many. The Camaro 1LE I looked at was a 2015 iirc.

I installed a Mishimoto Catch Can 1500 miles ago and this is what I’ve caught.

That is a byproduct of a catch can, nothing else. Its a matter of simple condensation that creates the moisture. Normally it evaporates in the combustion chamber, but if you choose to collect it and show it off that's cool too.

Yeah, I think everyone can acknowledge there will be blowby with every engine and there will be oil consumed but with port injection keeping valves clean, where's the issue with that?

I’m not sure if anyone looked into the smog aspects(California) from what I understand it usually causes some type of issue cause you’re messing with vacuum lines... this is from a smog website

Can I Install an Oil Catch Can and Pass Smog?
I was thinking about installing an "oil catch can" to help prolong engine life. Are they legal to install and still pass a visual and smog test here in California?

    Answer:

Unfortunately, installing an oil catch can will cause your vehicle to fail the smog inspection. The smog technician will have to identify your vehicle as having a modified PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. Although an oil catch is helpful to your engine's overall long term performance, the fact that the PCV system must be altered in order to install the oil catch can, will cause a smog check failure. The oil catch can is placed before the PCV valve and used to prevent crankcase oil from entering the intake manifold. This is helpful as it lessens carbon buildup on the intake valves. But again, unfortunately installing one reconfigures the manufacturer's original emission system design, and will not allow a vehicle to pass the California smog inspection.
