Is that an Eskimo Ice Fishing tent/shack? I've seen those and my first though was "that would make a sweet base camp tent".

Ok, you nailed the issues we are wrestling with. We are also fine with campgrounds and want the option of using the facilities and water and power hook ups but we have also found that having the roof top tent to set up and take down each time we want to take an off road route or just drive into town or to a trailhead or stream to fish or hike is a pain. We’d like to be able to drop a trailer set up the tent and then go off in the truck. Another option would be to have a camper like the Taxa’s for a base camp then take the truck with the RTT for overnight or multi day rides off road too. Either way we think the trailer will be useful and give us some good options.

That's the idea with the TM it's to be a base camp. It's compact enough and built well enough to handle fire roads and some rugged trails then when you get where your going just set up and your done. The other plus is it takes all of about an hour to clean up when we get home then you can store all your gear inside and keep it clean

That it is. It works well and is much easier to pack up than a traditional ground tent.

I have a Mitsubishi Type 73 (Japan's version of the M100/416) I have drug all over the west. Rock crawling to mud, it's seen it all.

Trailers are fantastic, you can carry all the shit you could ever want. A dream come true until, that is, you need to climb, descend, back up, turn around, or traverse anything off camber.

there's a reason we have the habitat!

If you decide a trailer is for you, and you plan on driving anywhere 4lo would be used... make sure your hitch to axle is short enough to pull the trailer in your trucks path... deep overhang on switchbacks can cause some dangerous situations. The reason the little 1/4t military trailers are so popular and cloned is their insane maneuverability.

Honestly not sure specific model, I bought it used. I'm pretty sure it's just the base model cause mine doesn't have the optional tailgate.

It gets staked down. It came with some obvious screw in ice anchors but they work in decent soil and I use additional tent stakes when it gets windy. Haven't had any issues in 40+ winds at tree line elevation

It’s been great to use and enjoy. When all setup with the awning it makes a great place to share with friends.

Part of what I've enjoyed so far. We've only been to campgrounds so far but have met a bunch of nice people from all over the world and shared a campfire

Serves me right for mentioning it without having posted a thread in the B/S/T section. I’ll PM you about it when I get back from my doctors appointments.

I have been considering trailers also. I want to set up base camp and then be able to move about. A teardrop would be nice but I think for me a tub type trailer with my roof top tent would be more useful. All of the trailers have their advantages, it is hard to decide which is best for your own use.

Well I have a RTT now... So I would entertain a military style trailer over a teardrop but the price... They're so expensive

RTTs are also really expensive (IMO) for what you get. There isn't a conventional pop-up on the planet that would hold up to even a mild off-road trail (weak construction, low ground clearance, etc...). I took my pop-up down a long gravel road to camp at a mountain bike race several years ago, I had to fix a few things when I got home, and that was just a gravel road my Corolla wouldn't have trouble on.

I'd like to entertain the idea of taking a wrecked 4x4 Tacoma bed, converting it to a trailer, throwing a cap on it, and getting one of those tents that attach to the rear of the bed. Probably could be done for $2000 and some time/effort. Probably less depending on where you dig up the bed and cap, lol...
