^this^ apparently. Well after my truck being at the dealership for 28 hours I finally got a response. Mud along with some dirt and water had frozen and jammed the parking brake mechanism.

Mine is a 2016 TRD OR and it is happening repeatedly. It’s been to the dealership twice and never found a real issue. They just had it over the prevous weekend and surfaced the drums and adjusted everything. 1 warmish week later it is snowing and cold and the driver rear wheel, always the same, is stuck. It just slides over the snow and ice if I put it on 4wheel drive and pulls to the side.
What a bunch of crap, vehicle built on 2016, over $36,000 , Toyota, and the e brakes do not work in winter?
    We are being had!

    Thanks, will check it out!
And even if not good for my health, I think I have reason to rant!
Now I want to find out how common is this on other Toyota models as I never heard of this before I owned a Tacoma. And I have family that drives Toyotas in Ottawa, Canada. Talk about cold and snow and never heard of this.
That write up is a cop out! They should make better e brakes system.
It is a total joke!!! I bet Lexus vehicles do not have this happen!

Wow lots of drum brake issues , let’s her from the drum brake fanboys lol
It’s just a normal drum brake issue, which is why only a few really cheap cars and no other truck available in the us automotive industry still uses drum brakes.

Sure enough, it is in the owners manual. But they provide no reference to this issue upon selling the truck, even in cold climate regions.
They could have put disc brakes on these trucks long ago, but for the love of profit. That is what reputation does, allows them to sell less for more and not upgrade, while other manufacturers have to include a lot more on their vehicles to compete. Get famous and you can even become...ups..digressing...
The service manager just called back. He has been doing it 19 years he said and did not know it was an issue or know it was in the manual until he talked to a regional guy about it after my call. And added that it appears to be happening more frequently with the new trucks.
So mighty Toyota just washes their hands and sells you a truck with “USE AT YOUR OWN RISK” parking brakes and does not tell you about it when you buy it.

Not to rain on your parade but you engage the parking brake on hot discs you're going to warp them. I have to remind myself of this on some of my other cars.

Learn the risks on what you have, become familiar with the manual instead of just what the salesman says and you'll be fine.

You have to be aware of "your" environment.. IE: if it's cold then warm then cold... and you drive thru 12" of H2O on the way home... Maybe setting the P brake is not the best option... Next time yes..!

I live in a cold climate, and have NEVER had an issue with the P brake..... I use it every time I park the truck.. that way it is always functional.... Like when I might need it..!

My neighbour never used his P brake and when he did need it (Brake fade).... I did not work as it was rusted to "rat shit"....!!

It is in the owners manual that IS telling you about it. Your supposed to read that thing that’s why it’s there.

    Thanks everyone that opined.
It's helped me become more clear about what is going on and what to expect.

But I am still not buying it.
Even if it is in the manual, it is a faulty system on these trucks in my opinion.
There are and there have been millions of cars in cold climates with rear drum brakes that never experience/ed this crap in winter.
I have been driving for 50 years and never had this happen before in my previous vehicles.
Our 2004 Subaru has never had this happen, my previous 1997 Ford Ranger which I had for about 18 years never had this happen, etc, etc...
    I rest my case.
So thanks for defending crappy Toyota engineering.
If this was a pervasive issue in all cars with drum brakes then long ago it would have been addressed.
If this was a pervasive issue even with Toyotas the dealership would have right away told me not to ever use the parking brake in winter.
And they see a lot of Toyotas in a year.
    OK I guess that's it.

Wonder how/why it is happening to these and why they are so different than all those other cars? I was underneath mine today trying to figure out some of the possibilities and see really that there are just the typical two ways for water to get into the drums- the main one from the back and a little bit through the lugs. Now, variables that people may be having to cause this are weather, yes, but may also include tire and wheel type (is more water being pulled into the alloy rear wheels including mist and spray from the undercarriage and front wheels when driving? Aerodynamics and even the shape of the wheel can cause it to act like a centrifugal fan), are the rear parts of the drums shaped so that they are exposed too much to allow water in, or is there something about the fender well that is doing it? You are right, we’ve all had cars that never had this happen before, Ive had at least six different types and makes that never had frozen brakes in harsh winters, too. So really, what gives with this model, a lot of people have been having this problem and I wonder if there is a common factor involved.

Actually the rear brakes on Tacomas are for offroad performance. And in at least one test, against the Colorado I believe, Taco beat the Colorado in braking distance even with its inferior rear tech. Mine has had no issues in freezing, as low as -25f, or from -10 to +32 overnight.

As to your problem here, wow! That sucks a big one and I'd be pissed if it were mine. If it's confirmed that that's not a problem, then damn! Best of luck in getting it figured out and fixed.

I know for a fact that if you spray water around the back of your wheels it will get into the drums. When weather permits in the winter, I use one of those long garden sprayers to rinse the salt off of the undercarriage. This is the only condition for me that causes the brakes to freeze.

One time last winter I gave the truck a good rinse before bringing it into my garage to do an oil change. When I pulled the drums to inspect the brakes, there was a good amount of water in the drums and on the brake shoes.

Note that I'm talking about a LOW PRESSURE rinse with a garden hose. I'm NOT using a pressure washer.
