Have you tried just getting a code cut key
that's what I did works way better than the old worn out key, and a whole lot cheaper than any other option

 

Replaced the rear diff breather, was stuck shut and original to the truck.

 

This is something everyone should check every oil change. Just make sure the cap moves take two seconds. If these stick/rust shut they will blow your rear axle and pinion seals.

 

Worth moving up higher too, always think it is weird that only that one sits so low.

 

Ive never checked that! Ill check today. Ive been wanting to relocate it, its on my list, maybe ill do that this weekend. Its a cheap mod right? lol truck gets nothing to expensive for a while.

 

I did have a seal go a while back, replaced with fresh fluid. Never really read about this as a maintenance item until recently. Took me under a minute, bolt came off with zero issues.

Maybe a total relocation is the next step?

 

It is a super easy job to relocate it, takes maybe 30mins. Just need a BSP union (yeah for some reason Toyota used British threads) and some hose as well as a cheapo small engine fuel filter. I relocated my breather to the fuel door area.

 

I like that a lot, will help keep a lot of stuff out.

What size union and tubing did you use?

 

Just some rubber 1/4 vacuum hose and I think the union is officially Toyota part number

Looks like my next project, just so I am clear, the union replaces the breather piece itself, connect the hose, place a small fuel filter somehwere along the line, then mount it near the gas cap?

 

That's what I did, the filter is actually right behind the plastic shroud in the fuel door compartment, I wanted it to be way out of the way.

The breather itself (90930-03136) has a filter in it, as I understand it - just like the one that's on the diff. A lot of folks don't put a breather (which has a check valve) when they relocate, they just put a filter.
