Will no mud flaps fuc* up my truck?

mudflaps look like shit... pull them

 

I just took my taco in to the dealer to show them all the damage on the clear film on the front edge of the bed. The black plastic guards. The bottom of my wheel flairs don't even have paint on them (now this is both sides). The clear film is peeling up and the dealer said it was stone chips. I left those big ugly mud flaps on and I think it hurt it more than help. First question from them was do you drive on stone roads. Do you have a stone driveway? I drive a st rt everyday to work. I've only owned this truck for 8 months and I might not own it 9. I usually keep my vehicles 10 plus years and never had this problem with any of the others. The last thing I wanted to do is a re-paint. It's just going to happen again.

 

I run a crew that works for a Toyota dealership. We repaint bumpers repair scratches and rock chips. I've worked on countless Taco's. And without a doubt if you remove you mud flaps you will see chips right in front of you rear wheels. ive seen it get so bad that it looks like someone took a sandblaster to the rocker panels. Leave them.

depending on the tire size and tread.. could pick up rocks and break some windshields on some cars behind you.....

 

The rock guard coating they put at the bottom of the panel panels does nothing.. I have a lot of chips in the area in front of the rear whee.

I plan on touching them up this summer, But It freakin sucks! I took my rears off last week bc they werent doing much good, having my tires stick out past them a couple inches. And that just looked funny! But I do hate the freakin rock chips.

I thaught about maybe some sliders would help? But I didnt want to spend the money for something I really dont need.

Mudflaps are an interesting topic in a way. You would be pretty surprised on how little they actually protect. There is a way to get an understanding of how much or little they do. Take a straight edge and put it between the ground and the back of the tire. In other words you are wedging it in there. Then place it on an angle at the bottom of the mudflap up to the body of your truck. You will then see how much or little it protects. I have not checked this on my Taco yet, but many times you will be surprised how little they do. Sometimes it is like a 6" protection or even less. Our flaps do hang pretty low, so you may get more.

I will add to this... if you are running 35s on your truck, mudflaps will do about NOTHING unless you of course get larger mudflaps. The angle of projectiles from your base of you tires will be huge and a mudflap will protect about a few inches only. Don't kid yourself on how much they actually do. The proof is in the science. Take the angle measurement as I mentioned in my last post.

I got sick of looking at the ridiculously long front mud flaps on my truck so I trimmed them. Tinning shears, Dremel, and some sandpaper did the trick. I cut off 2.5" from each of them and they look way better now.
