After about 15k miles my front coilover started leaking. I pulled both of them to have them rebuilt. I found one place in Sacrmaneto called Rock and Road. He quoted me about 110-130 per shock assuming no shafts need to be replaced.

Is this a fair rate? I assume it is but I don't know. Does anybody recommend a certain place?

Does anyone recommend that I rebuild them myself. It looked pretty time consuming. I'm sure I could do it but never have.

Anybody else disappointed by their Icon purchase? Perhaps I was too hard on them? I kinda thought they were designed for that.

You can do them yourself and then if/when they leak again you know that you can fix them. Reseal kits are easy to order from Wheeler's or Icon and you can even order Icon's oil if you want to use it.

Main cost will be deciding on how to pressurize them. Buy a tank and noloss chuck and gauges, or take them to any offroad/atv/dirtbike shop and tell them how much you want.

You will also need to decide how you want to disassemble the spring from shock body. Either purchase the clamps, rent them or take the COs to a shop and have them just remove the springs.

If they weren't Icon's I would have done them for beer. But alas...Icon and their silly hypodermic needle charge port and I broke that tool.
Samco Fabrication in Sparks has a nitro setup and does shock rebuilds. No idea what his rates are, but it's closer than Sac. Give Sam a call and tell him I sent ya over.

Well I didn't contact Icon because they are out of warranty. I also bought them second hand back in July 2016. I saw the original invoice and they were from May of 2016. The original owner ran them for a couple month (about 500 miles he says). And they were definitely in pristine condition.

And Icon also doesn't offer rebuild services for out of warranty shocks since February.

I am definitely into this. I think I would just buy the needle w/ the kits and have them charged though. I'm also worried that I might need to polish the shafts which I'm not sure about. Hopefully they're not pitted but I figure prepare for the worst.

@jberry813 I think I bought a set of shocks off craigslist from you a while back. I like beer too. Would you entertain rebuilding them without the charging them? Or I'd be happy to buy/donate the needle or whichever tool you broke. I can also provide beer/cash/whatever.
I'd just like to get them back in ASAP. I bought a set of Bilstein 5100's and I'm really not loving the ride.

If not, thanks for the suggestion at least. :)

Which shocks...I've sold a lot of crap :anonymous:

Sorry, but I'll pass on rebuilding. I vowed never to work on ICONs again after the last time when I broke the needle (and also made up some of my own swear words). Not worth my sanity.

So they are non rezi? Polaris uses the same needle port, or at least they did. Call a local polaris dealer and see if they would fill your COs, then you would have an idea on cost.

    Stuff and junk and things...
I've broken a few of the Fox nitrogen needles at $55 each for the sort ones and $80ish for the long needles. I'm back to my OG motion pro with metal seat needles. I talk all the raptor rebuilds into adding schraders because the needle pellets suck so bad!

    https://www.polyperformance.com/fox-nitrogen-safety-needle-802-01-000-kit

FYI they don't work on Icon or radflo nitrogen needle ports.

OP I can rebuild them if your willing to ship them.

How often do Icons and Kings need to be rebuilt? I’m going to be making that decision in the future and it will help a lot knowing before hand.

Usually around 25-30k with normal use or daily driving. The miles til rebuild will go down with harsher use like off-roading. Icon usually says you don’t need to rebuild until you see oil leaking.

That’s unfortunate. I don’t really want to deal with pulling them off that often. I do a lot of driving and that seems like a huge inconvenience. Whats the turnaround time and cost to get a leaker fixed? Should Kings be rebuilt at specific mileage intervals?

All coilovers will be about the same. That’s just the price you pay for going with adjustable coilovers vs say 5100s. You could probably stretch the intervals some but that could lead to more expensive rebuilds if you cause more wear to the internals.

Thank you for the offer. I've decided I'm just going to get the one fixed. At first I thought it would be worthwhile to do the pair but then I figure if it's not broke don't fix it. Let me see what it would cost to get it fixed locally vs shipping. So far it sounds about like 100+ dollars.

Yea I don't know if I would have bought them if I knew that before hand. Luckily I got a good deal, so it's whatever. I took the stock springs from a FJ cruiser (similar or same as tacoma I assume) and put them on some bilstein 5100's. And I swear to god i've never heard so much noise and rattling come from my truck. It sounds like something is loose under the engine but every time I check I don't see anything wrong. I guess after having them a while you forget how much of an improvement they are. I actually feel a little better knowing they're only suppose to last about 25k. I put 15k on them and I go on dirt roads often and went through one hell of a winter last year. So I guess I have no reason to fault Icon.

edit: maybe I will just have the set rebuilt instead on the one leaking.

Should definitely rebuild both at the same time. No sense in rebuilding one knowing the other might blow in a week.

Downsouth Motorsports also offers rebuild services via shipping. Call and talk to Micah if you want to do that. They get pretty good rates on shipping.

Ok. Thanks again jberry I'll get a price from them as well. Samco couldn't give an exact price but definitely nice and helpful. I will probably just take them there unless I can find a closer spot. I'll get a shipping quote first though. Would be nice to not have to make 2 trips.

Should these 5100's be so freaking loud? I thought these things were suppose to be good lol. I had them assembled at a reputable shop. but damn these roads just shake my brain when I drive now.
