I'm tearing the third out of my truck tomorrow for an ARB re-seal. Might take the XJ up if you guys go however. I can't be the guide though, since I don't have any idea where I'm going up there...

They’re pretty robust. As long as they clear the UCa they make they’re own room

    Wow that's hella early. lol.

I'm around 2 hours away, and trying to not leave super early to wake up the wife. Can probably leave around 8 or so, need to discuss with the wife on any earlier. She's been feeling shitty lately and I want her to get her rest.

Okay so. This thread is slowing down and it’s been a while since we’ve gotten into a great TW style debate. I’m gonna open up discussion on a topic and see where the informational waterfall takes us.

Today’s topic, winch line dampeners (dampers)

I don’t have a strong opinion on using one vs not using one so I’m just gonna State a few things I’ve noticed and see what everyone else has to say. I don’t have as much experience winching as Hunter but my dad had a tow truck while I was growing up and I have always had my foot in the door with some type of off-roading so I have a decent amount of winching time. Now I 100% understand the reasoning/logic behind a winch line dampener, but I had never heard or seen one until camping had suddenly turned into “overlanding”. I have also never seen a cable or synthetic rope fail with or without a dampener, I’ve only read internet folklore of this happend so use one. So that leads me to believe there is a slight chance that these are part of the overlanding cult just like deadman tarps and spiked shovels.

Also I’ve never seen a line dampener used in any industrial applications such as a crane, logging operations, cable operated machinery, roll off dumpster trucks, or tow trucks. Some of these the operator is within a couple of feet of the cable. And what’s to say even using a dampener that the cable doesn’t break between the dampener and the operator rendering the dampener completely useless. Should one place a dampener every foot or so to prevent that. Also the dampener is there to slow the cable down because a broken cable “is like a rubber band”. Who’s to say that the cable won’t snap and be moving so fast that it would slip right through the dampener like the old table cloth trick?

I’ve been doing a small amount of digging online and I haven’t been able to find any info or videos proving they work or don’t work. All I can seem to dig up is dozens of people regurgitating the same old song and dance “use one cause it’s safe and the internet says so”. So I figured I’d open a discussion about it. :D

I can't have an opinion on this as I don't have experience with winching at all aside from watching other people do it, I found this vid in the depths of youtube and its the only vid Ive seen of some sort of test, not sure if it makes much of a difference that its 2:1 but I couldn't see a huge difference either way. Im on the better safe than sorry side personally.
