I hear yea there. The points that sold me on 255's was no cab mount chop to fit them. And I put a full size spare in the stock location. I always have gear or dogs in my bed so no room for a tire.

255/85-16's on my 02 4Runner. Put about 400 miles on them so far. They're quiet and balanced with no issues. Plan to go into the mountains with them this weekend and they're calling for snow tonight.

I also stuffed a 255/85/16 ST Maxx in the stock spare location (3rd gen), and I noticed the exhaust was quite close to the tire. I'm thinking I should probably toss some sort of heat shield on the pipe to deflect heat from the tire... have you thought about addressing that or done anything to protect the spare tire yet? I'm still gathering ideas for the fix, haven't bought or installed anything yet.

I'll look more into this tomorrow. I didn't think mine was close enough to be an issue, but now I'm curious.

    What killed it?

I have some pretty deep cuts in my sidewalls but they still hold air.

When I went from 265/70R17 Falken Wildpeak ATWs to the 255/80R17 Maxxs I actually saw an improvement on gas mileage. On the highway I would get around 21 or so, as long as I kept it cruising under 70mph. Around town I would get 18-19, again as long as I wasn't in the skinny pedal. I noticed a little bit of power loss, especially going up some big hills. Switched back to my winter tires (265/70R17 Nokians) and i'm averaging 15-17mpg, but that's all city traffic and in snow and idling a lot more so is what it is.

the 255s will def get better mileage then the 285s

I wouldn't worry about it. That pipe doesn't get hot enough to cause concern.

Have they decided to make a Load Range C version of these in 265/75/16?

Sorry - being lazy and haven't checked their website lately. :anonymous:

Here's one from today so you can see where they sit in the fender. First full tank of gas with the 255/85/16's I averaged 16.95mpg. Pretty good since I crossed the cascade mountains twice today on that tank. Put another 175 miles on the tires today, dirt and asphalt. So glad I finally have these.

Is about 17mpg a decrease from before?

No difference at all. I was pretty surprised by that.

If I ever go to the ST Maxx's I sure hope my mileage doesn't change!
