Yeah Toyota talks out of both sides of their mouth a lot. The Lexus lineup has vehicles now using turbos to gain power at the same mpgs as the out going naturally aspirated engines, yet Toyota will go ahead and say that turbo engines are not reliable and waste fuel...

Marketing at its finest. Toyota is built on the old and reliable. Lexus competes on the trendy and the new. Toyota gets to have its cake and eat it too.

Honesty, when you factor in the price of premium fuel, my stock Tacoma was cheaper to drive per tank than my GTI. In my experience, turbo vehicles that require premium fuel aren't that much more efficient. They're just more fun.

Almost all of Fords Ecoboost engines take regular. My wifes Escape does. 275 HP stock. She gets about 25 mpg overall and does mostly city driving.

Yeah, we replaced our older 1.8T VW with a nearly new Golf Mk7 1.8T that takes regular fuel and seems to be tuned a bit more for economy, getting about 40 on the highway, but still has 170 hp (20 more than the old one). It’s the only “modern” Turbo 4 I’ve had experience with, but compared to the older VW and the Turbo Forester I used to own, mpg is much better, powerband is great, and top end is still fun. All of those are/were 5 speed manual ... not sure about a ten speed auto but at least unwanted gear changes should be smoother with tighter gear spacing. I’m old enough to have driven the original Ford 2.3 Turbo 4 in the ‘79 Fox Mustang and that was not a great engine.

Ford's engines get economy and performance.. I mean c'mon a 310/350 hp/tq I4... That's German level shit right there. Toyota knows it can, but they already charge too much for their trucks... If they FI it and keep with their pricing trends it'll be too expensive. If the FI'd the tundras V8 it'd kill all competition.

Another thing that appeals to me is the ranger has METAL bumpers directly to the frame, none of this plastic and aluminum crash bar stuff...

This will make aftermarket bumpers stupid simple and require no cutting/ potentially legal complications (such as removing the crash bar or ditching the pedestrian safe fat lip)

Steel body but aluminum tailgate skin and hood are cool, saves weight where you don't need steel.

the Aussie version has impressive payload and towing figures as well, and the American version will probably have more power and potentially higher numbers. This truck has to perform full size duties in the global market... Because they don't have full sizes over there.

The only thing that will kill this truck for me is if they don't incorporate dual injection on it. The 2.7 & the 3.5 recieved dual injection upgrades because ford was aware of the carbon deposit issues on the intake side. Hopefully we will see that carried over.

Should also add ford has not come out with a factory approved maintenance procedure for cleaning these valves. BMW has walnut media blasting to solve their issues.

Anyone heard what the expected release date is for the truck? Are they not releasing it until early 2019 or will we see it available 2018?

Yes a few places are reporting January 2019. It sounds like release date will depend on when they can bring the renovated plant to production capacity. The truck is being built in Michigan at its newly renovated ultra modern plant that used to build small cars.

They sell that many F series. That's not just the f150. Still a lot of trucks though.

I've heard you could potentially start seeing them pop up at dealers/be able to order them late 2018

Exactly! It's not a very lets say "aggressive" looking truck. The bed looks horrible and with not that much room those rally bars don't help it.
I don't think the Tacoma is it's main competition. I would guess this would be the Honda Ridge Line's nemesis. Two soccer mom pick ups dueling it out.

I think you're delusional if you think it's not going to compete with the Tacoma on looks alone. By all accounts it seems to be a very capable truck. It's a cab on frame, will have good power (more than ours) probably tow more, locking rear diff, similar feature to our crawl control...

We have the option for a stick where it doesn't appear this will, but let's stay grounded in reality here.

TheAussie version has a 7700 lbs towing capacity with a payload capacity of 2100. I don't see Tacoma or Honda touching that. The styling is reserved yes, but that's to appeal to a wider market, we can change that later, as most of us do already on the tacomas. The FX4 is comparable to a TRD Off Road, and that raptor version they ran in Australia will definitely destroy a Pro.
