    Doesn't take a scholar to know 4wd > 2wd on ice.

But hey you're the self professed "boarder" who sucks at snowboarding so what do I know lol.

I said it wasn’t as easy as I thought. I’m not the biggest fan of modesty, but I would say I’m more of a self professed READER and comprehender. Im magnificent. You should see me comprehend. No offense, but you’re terrible at it. And yeah I suppose board related activities sorta go with the environment I was raised in. Sucks about Washington. You sound like a miserable surf/skate fella.

Oh mighty comprehender! Why can't thee comprehend that board sport skill sets translate to other board sports.... and that my 65 year old aunt is actually terrible at driving in snow storms despite living in BC, I wonder when was the last time she got her Volvo sideways :notsure:

I'm just in awe of your comprehension :)

And yeah Washington kinda sucks compared to San Diego... then again pretty much everywhere sucks when compared to SD. Yup, I'm THAT guy :lalala:

What can I say. Comprehension comes natural to me, like board related activities. I maintain that I’m not as proficient on a snowboard as I am in the water or even more so on a waxed ledge, but that’s ok. Snowboarding, to me, is the least important of all three. And SD is America’s finest city for so many reasons. The tacos (truck and food) the burritos (that’s translates to “mini donkey” if anyone was wondering) the desert. The beach. I suppose it would be a wonderland for someone coming TO it. It was when I first met it. But for some people it is not a Home. There isn’t enough real adventure there. Just really hot girls and great food and spoon fed sunny weather. You’re gonna do great there.

On icy roads, 4WD gives you more control. It doesn't help with breaking. It's effect is diminished when no tires have traction. In general, on icy roads, it give you more control while driving.

4HI, go slow, keep your distance is the right idea.

hahaha damn ok I gotta admit that was a pretty sick burn. You win this round.

And yes that's a good description of SD, I'll concede it can make you soft.

Literally 6wd or 2wd if you’re on ice it doesn’t matter how many tires you got spinning. The moment you lose traction unless you got rank tracks on all those spinning wheels ain’t doing squat.

X2. A lot of mis information on here. 4WD does make a difference, and is twice the traction of 2WD. Especially with how light the bed is. You need those front tires turning too

I work on ice roads and work sites on frozen lakes in northern canada every winter and our company has a fleet of about 12 trucks (plus about another 20 trucks for other contractors) that commute on frozen roads (80kmh speed limit) every day to go to work which is on lake ice (40 kmh speed limit). First thing I tell my workers when they arrive on site: if you are ever caught driving while not in 4hi you are fired immediately (same goes for turning off traction control). Anyone who says there is no benefit to driving in 4wd on ice is out to lunch and has no idea what they are talking about.

And you think you're just as likely to lose traction in a 2wd as a 6wd??

Its pretty clear the jeep was just fucking around, I've done the same.

Also on ice you generally want to inflate UP, I run 15psi in mud and sand... I run 40-45psi on ice. On mud/dirt/sand you want a wider contact patch and more sidewall flex to get maximum traction. On ice a wider contact patch just more evenly distributes your weight and makes you MORE likely to slide. You want to narrow the contact patch as much as possible and concentrate your weight, this will allow your tire to more "pierce" the slippery stuff on top and try to get to the traction-able surface below. This is why pizza cutters are popular on snow/ice. You also want a STIFF sidewall as flex on ice can be less predictable.

This is all great advice except I think you should reconsider the old adage of "deflate for traction", as explained in another post that's true on mud/sand but for ICE you want to actually do the opposite and air up.

That's why mud guys get wide mud terrains and run them at 12-15psi and icey road guys get skinny pizza cutters and run them at 35-40psi.
