Fuel the Fire, or Stay the Filter?

One question I have is....why doesn't Toyota recommend changing the filter if it's beneficial to do so? Don't they want their vehicles to run well?

 

Because American Corporate mentality. On the Hilux, there is a replaceable fuel filter. It is in the engine bay. The part number is lost in the abyss of my build thread.

 

Well.... damnit, guess ill be doing this sooner than later.

Whats easier on a DSCB? dropping the tank or pulling the bed. I have a hunch the sending unit is at the front of the tank under the cab yes? @snowsk8air2 you had to do a fuel pump, which route did you take?

Dcsb you have to drop the tank. Pulling the bed doesn't give you access to the pump unfortunately. I wish it did though

 

I just winged it. It's not very difficult.
The "most interesting" part was cutting the base out and opening up the stock filter to hold the new pump. That and the 6 inch piece of hose that comes with a 255lph pump was too short. Luckily I had ordered a 12 inch piece, just in case.

 

Does the URD kit include a pre-filter of any kind to protect the pump?

The pump comes with a filter sock.

Have a dremel with a cutoff wheel ready. As well as stripper & crimpers.

 

Question: I've been thinking about this all night. If the fuel pump filter is clogged or the pump isn't sufficiently flowing enough fuel and this is reducing power....doesn't that mean the engine is running dangerously LEAN? If this is true, then why aren't Tacomas blowing up engines?

 

That would be worst case scenario.

 

Something to consider is the pore size, porosity %, and mass load capacity of the OEM fuel filter itself. These filters may capture the big chunks, or have the capacity to retain a hell of a lot of solids while allowing for a sufficient volume gasoline to pass through.

A thought regarding @Torspd's answer to your question. The Tacoma is sold primarily in North America, where the refining, storage, transportation of gasoline, and thus the fuel itself, is generally pretty "clean". Hilux is sold throughout the rest of the world, which obviously includes places where the fuel isn't so clean or of quality. Thus, it would be reasonable from a corporate pov to have an external fuel filter for the Hilux and an internal "non-service" filter*.

*Look at our transmissions if you want evidence of that type of thinking.

 

We strive on minimum standard consistency.

 

Recently brought to light, in a s/c thread, was the lph flow of the fuel filter which comes with the URD kit. It is right around the flow capacity of the 255lph.

If building the engine for performance which requires a higher flow, that needs to be realized and accounted for.
