I see this a lot in videos and articles from Australia. I tend to believe they’re methods because they go off-road and make recoveries to live not just purely for recreation like most/all of us. But yes you need something that doesn’t have an edge to attach to

Unfortunately as much thinking and planning ahead I do, in the heat of the moment tends to be a different scenario than an hour later going over what was dumb and what could have been done safer. Fortunately I have not had gear failure while recoveries. First off I do have one dampener but forget bout it all the time. Also I have three snatch blocks but don't believe I will be getting more dampeners, maybe use jacket/sweat shirt if I think about it.. Secondly, not sure why but my first thought while winching is to make sure the line evenly spools the drum. Thus why I always stand at the winch and try to disperse the line throughout the drum
I'm overly concerned that the line could spool all on one side and bind the line and stress/burnout the winch, all in which stops the recovery and possibly puts winch out of service. Not sure what I can do to break this habit but I'm aware I stand in the danger zone..

The tow hook on my work truck that I sent the picture of to you, I cant find any specs on it. At least not in my 15 mins of google search at work. I did read a few forums where people said 30k, some said 60k limits. I would think that this kind of tow hook, modified in some way and welded to the truck, would be more than strong enough. here's a video with a slightly different style

 

That's what I was thinking. Maybe 1-1/2" Chromoly tubing bent into a half hoop

 

I'll see what I can come up with. I'm going this weekend to get my HC rear bumper laid out. I'll play with the tubing bender while he is making the bumper.
