I was surprised at some of the companies that my son told me that he gets tech support calls from. A lot of the Mac run companies are overseas, all around the world. When they get ready to roll out a patch he starts to get antsy and complaining that they will get slammed with calls and tickets. It certainly is not an enterprise solution, at least IMO and most others. And doubt that most companies that run it in house have even a dev, test and prod environment as a minimum.

We hates it, preciousssss. We hates all the Macsesses. In an enterprise environment they're as useful as nuts on a steer.

We're 100% Windows. I tinkered with MacOS and what I'd need to manage it (Mac Server vs MDM, etc.) a while back because I had a fear that we'd be made to bring it in. Fortunately, that didn't happen.

People actually run that OS in an enterprise environment? The administration and deployment tools are pathetic in comparison to the Microsoft world. You've either got an MDM that fits within Apple's super restrictive framework, or you've got a Mac Server that lets you do more but you can't legally run it on enterprise grade hardware or virtualize it. You've got to be kidding me.

I know people with large Apple environments and I can't understand it. I feel like I'm missing something.

RH 6.0 was my introduction to Linux. Tried several versions, derivatives and other flavors of Linux. Debian seemed to work best for me, though I don't use it in an enterprise environment.

    Yeah.
I downloaded floppy images of Slackware Linux off of Compuserve. I was running OS/2 Warp at the time. I loved OS/2 Warp. Used it while I was in school. If my homework programs crashed I could just shut down the session and open a new one as opposed to rebooting my machine.

With Slackware, I couldn't get my CD drive to work. That was back when you had to have a controller card, and there were both Sony and Panasonic standards (IIRC). I had a combo sound card/CD-ROM controller and never found a kernel with the right combination of hardware support. Ah, good times.

Speaking of MACs. Any of you Mac boys realize that this new Intel shit affects you too?

Intel and all the folks from security fims said the patch would really only be detectable in performance decreases if you were a big poweruser. So Mac folks should be just fine haha

Considering it's an 'Intel' issue and not a 'Windows' issue, yes we're aware. Not sure why the animosity for Macs on here. I'm a geek and I love all things Technology.

No real animosity here, only in jest. I use an old MacBook that my company retired as my main computer for anything that doesn't require processing power when I'm at home. Somehow the battery still works. Used to have to manage lots of macs in schools and that was less than ideal but its doable haha.

Macs are good when they are used for what they were designed for. Enterprise applications and management is not that.

At the time, I had no problem installing RH. I couldn't get the modem working to get it on the internet. For some reason, RH 6.2 refused to see my mouse.

This is what I do currently. They've certainly got their hold in the education market.

No animosity for Macs here, Apple pays my son well with great benefits and he moved out of the house. Well he is moving back in at the end of the month though let me think that one through and get back to you. Macs are fine as long as I don't have to deal with them at work and make them play well with others and run apps that are not built for Apple OS. Every home in America could run Macs and it wouldn't bother me. More job security for my son.

Yes they do. We had some Mac and some Win so we were using them with Active Directory and boy was that a pain to keep working. Also for some reason our management decided AirPorts were the ideal WiFi source, it was the worst, no separate vlans, they went down after firmware updates plus they had a low client limit. Those caused more issues than the Macs did

In my county we have one large district that is about 80% Mac. The rest of us are nearly all Windows. I think it comes down to whatever the particular district started out with.

An Apple rep came in once and tried to push us to start moving that way. He kept touting machine lifespan, but we're already getting what he mentioned out of our PCs. It just wouldn't make sense for us to move to a platform that is 3x the cost with less than 10% market share when we have a rock solid Windows environment.

My first Citrix installs were WinView which was OS/2 based and allowed multiuser sessions running Windows 3.1 and Novell Netware client. My first Citrix certs were on WinFrame though which was NT 3.51

We had an ex-upper level staff member who worked offsite, and Mac was his choice. Never ending issues trying to get him functioning in our environment, compounded by the fact he was a "latest and greatest" guy, constantly fiddling with stuff and changing hardware / sofwtware. Since he was upper level, I couldn't just tell him to piss off and get with the program. Life is simpler since he moved on.

Macs don't work on our secure VPN, and using 2FA over Citrix on a Mac requires a PhD in Frustration. Our help desk's answer when a user complains that their personal Mac won't CAG is "then get a computer."
