    That looks like a sock that possibly goes into the fuel tank. Fuel Filter on my 98 is in-line with the fuel line under the driver side, along the frame.

    You definitely have a canister filter along the driver side frame rail. The video below is for a 3rd Gen 4runner but it will work for Tacomas too. The only difference is how you disconnect the power to the fuel pump. You don't have an access hatch above the fuel pump like the 4runner has. If you want to disconnect the power to the fuel pump and run the engine to depressurize the fuel lines, you'll have to reach up on top of the gas tank from under the truck. I've looked at a buddy's truck and it's doable to get you hand up there to disconnect it. If it ends up being too much of a hassle, you can always try breaking the lines free without depressurizing the lines. I've done it before so I know it works.

    A fuel filter from Toyota cost around $36 and typically are good for around 50K miles. You get what you pay for (if you are lucky). For $7 I wouldn't bother.

    The price of a fuel filter from Toyota is high, I know. Sounds to me like you probably don't drive very often where only fools dare to go, and Bosch is well-known in Germany for quality.

    Just called local dealer, getting that (OEM Toyota) instead for $40. Thanks all

    Now I need to find the size/thread of the 2 bolts/nuts so I can get stainless steel ones today

    I found the part number for the nuts (2) for the bracket and it's #90179-06161. Any way to find out the nut size so I can go to the hardware shop?

    My gas tank rotted out so I got to see inside tank at 170,000 miles. Sock in first pic was spotless and I change fuel filter about every 50,000. Toyota does not give an interval for filter change out as they believe it is a life time thing. Perhaps with newer style ( last 25 years ) fiberglass underground storage tanks and better pump maintenance by the majors bad fuel is really a myth? Rust in fuel was a real issue years ago but not so much now?

    ordered myself a fuel filter today, hasn't been done in at least 2 years / 50k...I'm sure longer than that.

    Just got the truck back, OEM filter was original (1995 with 206k) and replaced with OEM:thumbsup:
